Re: [newbie] Mandrakesoft CEO defends Linux
Hello, I just read that story myself and felt he was a bit hard on linux, but I cut this piece out and think he has a pointinregards to the suse pro ver 7 which I have. When I first installed it it installed 3417 packs and used just over 6.5 gig of my hard drive. Far too many apps for me . Linux blows windoze out of the water, and I am having a ball with linux, learning how to move around in bash and installing software and learning how to upgrade kde 1.2x to 2.0.1. Much more fun that plain jane windoze, with only one desk top and so on. "quote" The way I see it, for Linux to become a viable desktop platform, it needs to slim down and streamline its offerings. A Linux truly designed for the desktop should include: An installer as easy to manage as that of Corel Linux Automatic network/Internet configuration Tough, preconfigured security for network/Internet access A conservative roster of applications, including an email client; a Web browser; office tools such as a word processor, a spreadsheet, and presentation apps; an image editor; a media player; an HTML editor; Telnet, FTP, and other network utilities Preconfigured Windows/Mac OS file system and network support A single window manager that integrates the best of existing desktop environments into a pared-down, easily configurable workspace A modicum of accessories such as a calculator and an address book User-friendly network administration tools Corporate users may not need even half of these applications, since IT departments will determine which apps are supported by the company. And many more applications may deserve to be included. But as a basic desktop system, a version of Linux, as outlined above, would prove much more appealing and useful to folks who don't live and breathe Linux. Re: [newbie] gates gets Linux
Thats true, I believe that linux should not become like windoze windoze sucks and makes people lazy. Been their done that and now am learning linux. I installed suse linux 7 pro and with 3417 apps it took about 6.5 gb of my hard disk. There is so much in linux. I looked through the minues in kde and was surprised at how many apps I have installed now. I am having a ball learning linux. When I learn't windoze it was easy it does every thing for you. Linux lets you make mistakes and teaches you how to fix these mistakes, Linux is the real os My 2cents worth Regards Anthony Daniell David Raleigh Arnold wrote: > > Mark Johnson wrote: > > > > FYI, I asked for 6 button mouse for Christmas! > yhs: > 1 > 2 > 3 > 1+2 > 1+3 > 2+3 > 1+2+3 > count 'em. > > Windows users have bad habits. Re: [newbie] gates gets Linux
Hi, you could always get the code for kde and rewrite it yourself to do what you want, as for myself I don't know jack about programing and am new to linux. Even with the double clicking it blows windoze out of the water. You could also make sugestions to the kde and gnome teams about this. My 2cents worth. Regards Anthony Daniell. Re: [newbie] Linux v Windows
Hi, I have been using windoze for ten years. I am moving away from windoze now and have got suse 7, mandrake 7 & 7.1, corel 1 & 1.2 R H 6 & 6.2 I find linux very easy to install and run, the only problem I am having is installing software. I have a scanner which I would love to use under linux and an ide cd burner and a logitech quickcam express which I can not get any software for, which makes it hard for me. By the way windoze is not idiot proff, but their is a lot more surport for windoze and this makes a difference to the average computer user who just wants to play games and surf the net. Linux blows windoze out of the water. Re: [newbie] Star Office 5.2 with mdk 7.2
Hi, I found the best thing to do is just let it install and it sets itself up for that user. Hope this helps you out. Regards Anthony Daniell - Original Message - From: S.
