[newbie] What is WINE?

2002-03-17 Thread Aryan Ameri

Hi there:
Thanks for the answers on File system. Now as a
Linux newbie, I have another basic question
I really want to know what is WINE? I know that it
is a technology that run Windows apps under Linux. But I really don't know how
to do so. I mean can I just insert my Office XP CD Rom and install it the way I
do with windows?Or do I need to somehow tweak it? And what programs can I
use under WINE? Andby the way how can I get it? how can I run it? ( Shall
I run it? I mean is it an app? )
Well I appreciate any information that you can give
me about WINE. Maybe a URL will help.

[newbie] Which firewall?

2002-03-17 Thread Aryan Ameri

Hi there:
Well thanks all of you guys for your answers about
the WINE thing. I really didn't expect to learn about WINE so much in just one
day. I went to the codeweavers website and downloaded the Demo version. It
really works nice and it met my expectations. If I'm am going to learn Linux
with this pace, I will definitely delete my windows partition soon.
I have another question. When I used to use
Windows,I used a Firewall called ZoneAlarm. It really was a fine
product. It was freeware and it gave me the security that I needed. Now I want
to use a firewall in Linux and I don't know what to use and how to use it. The
best part about Zone Alarm was that it was very easy to setup and use. I have a
dial up connectionso I don't have a static IP address and zone alarm did
provide the security that I needed ( It passed Steve Gibson's test at www.grc.com and that is all I need)I know
that there are plenty of firewalls out there but they seem to be for experts. is
there any easy to use firewall for Linux? if so where can I get it? again maybe
a URL will help.
Thanks

[newbie] Which File system?

2002-03-16 Thread Aryan Ameri

Hi there:
Maybe It's an old question and man of you have seen
similar questions. But I read the archive and couldn't make up my mind. I am a
newbie to Linux and am willing to buy Mandrake Linux 8.2. But I don't know what
file system to use.
I am willing to install my Linux on my desktop
computer. I don't want it to be secure. nor I want it to give me back up
options, nor do I use RAID. I just want the fastest File system and I want it to
be stable enough ( not that much stable, any thing more stable than FAT will
suite me).
If possible please also give me a list of File
systems that are available with version 8.2 and please tell me which one best
suit my needs.

[newbie] Lycoris or Mandrake?

2002-03-13 Thread Aryan Ameri

Hi there:
I am an old windows user that is tired and sick of
Microsoft's policies. So I turned to Linux and I now Love this OS and the open
source community. I only have one problem with Linux and that's the ease of
use.
I used to use Red Hat 7.1 for a couple of months
and then I found out that it wasn't for me. I was able to find my way trough KDE
but couldn't play my VCDs for example. Also I never understood tar files. Now
I'm in search for the easiest Linux Distro. I really don't too many software
packages or stability ( any Linux Distro is Stable comparing to Windows). I just
need the easiest to use Distro.
I found out that Mandrake is the Distro that
everybody says suits my needs. But I also found out that there is a Company
named Lycoris ( formerly known as Redmond Linux) that is making a Distro called
Desktop/LX. As far as I can see it's very easy to use. It is very user
friendlyfor windows users and it use WINE ( by default) and also
play DVDs and VCDs Automatically ( I really like this). As far as I can see
other than Documentation there is no clause for me to use Mandrake.( also I'm a
little concerned about mandrake soft's financial problems).
Maybe this is not the right place to ask this
question because it is a Mandrake mailing list. But I really can't make up my
mind in this mater. I am going to buy One of these distros in about a week.
Please help mein this.
