Re: [newbie] X-server (2)
You have to edit the file /usr/bin/fndSession
Re: [newbie] X-server (2)
Correction: In my system I had to edit /usr/sbin/fndSession
Re: [newbie] kernel boot problem
Assuming that your linux partition is on /dev/hda5 From the Mandrake CD copy this to your c:\ in windows 98 1. vmlinuz 2. loadlin.exe Boot in msdos mode (do not use an msdos window) Go to the root of c:\ loadlin.exe c:\vmlinuz boot=/dev/hda5 rw I suggest next time read the corresponding howto.
Re: [newbie] Run LEVEL 5
You can do either of two things. When Lilo starts and you see its prompt ( LILO:), instead of typing "linux" , you type "linux 3" to force the system to go into runlevel 3 (command line mode). If you want to boot permanently into runlevel 3, open your editor and edit the file /etc/initab to read id:3:initdefault Jesse Royall wrote: Is there a way to change the run level? I have command line only availible to me but Mandrake insists on booting all the way up to the Desktop where I can't see a thing to beging with. I SWEAR Bill Gates has his fingers in with Madrake or Linux (Mandrake would be my choice right now). OR windows 98 has somehow leaked over to the slave drive and infected Linux. Everytime I turn around something keeps me from proceeding to my goal. But for now I need to know how to get to the command line after Linux boots. I can't do a thing with the desktop. is there something like a F8 key or some little button to push to kick me back to the line? I have tried reinstalling Linux 6 times 6 different ways and they all have sent me back to the KDE. I even deleted the partition (which usually works) and started from scratch. any ideas? Re: [newbie] cdrw
I suggest you re-read the cd-writing howto. The necessary information is there. I have a HP7200i IDE/ATAPI drive and are able to use both CDR and CDRW. A good program to erase CDRW is gcombust. I don't mean to be rude here, but before you ask for help please READ and try to COMPREHEND. Sometimes it is necessary to re-read a document, since some of them are very detailed and contain too much information to be digested at once. You are going to need strong reading skills if you want to succeed as a Linux user. Sorry about it but it is the cold hard truth. Sean King wrote: pete moss wrote: this is a bit off topic here but, when i was in wondows i could use my cdrw drive to make cdr and cdrw. now that i am in linux, i only see mentions of cdr. has anyone successfully written a cdrw in linux? how? have you rewritten one as well? do i write it like a cdr, or is there a special method? thanks for any tips or links to howtos. the current cd-writing howto doesnt mention cdrw. :P I was wondering if you could tell me how you got it working as a cdr? I can't even get that working. Sean

Re: [newbie] StatrOffice 5.1
After doing some research i found out about the /net switch. Thank you all for your help Belzebub wrote: I downloaded and installed Star Offie 5.1 on my Mandrake 6.0 distribuition. I made an updated CD just before 6.1 came out, so I have a custom CD with all the last updates before 6.1. My kernel is 2.2.13. After the installation finished, I am able to run the application as root or superuser, but as a regular user. Any suggestions?
Re: [newbie] 6.0 hangs on boot :(
If you are talking about your newly installed kernel, here is whta I did: 1. Booted Mandrake with a floppy or a rescue disk. 2. Deleted the directory where I had my kernel modules (in my case /lib/modules/2.2.9mdk 3. Go to /usr/src/linux 4. make modules make modules_install 5. Check your lilo.conf and make sure you are booting your new kernel 6.Reboot and cross your fingers.
