Subject: [newbie] Power failures whilst in LM

 Hi Friends

 1. What safety measures/preventative action should I take to minimise the
 effects of sudden power failures.
 2. I read somewhere that switching off the system without logging out in
the
recommended manner (equivalent to a power failure) can/will (I'm not sure
which) result in corruption of sys files rendering LM unbootable (or was
 that an exageration).
 3. For example are there special keyboard inputs I can make to save that
which is in Ram as I go along, say every 10 minutes.
 4. Win will scan the disk and save corrupt or unlinked files - what does
LM
 do in this situation.

 Thanks

 Alan (South Africa)

answer to 1 is buy an ups protection and plug your system in to it so that
in the event that you lose power

anser to 2 Switching off system when power is on can possible corrupt and
operating system see 1
answer to 3 most applications have an auto save timer you can enable that

4.) I do not know if you give more info on system than i make an educated
guess

First: I cant get my sound-card to operate correctly. Lothat detects it
correctly as a Yamaha Xwave direct 128, initializes it, and believes that
it is good. The probnlem is, is that when I test it, it only plays the
first half of the sample. Any ideas??

second, when I try to boot my SMP system with the SMP Kernel, it locks,
ifallibly, every time, as it tries to initialize the ramdisk driver. This
is
the stock kernel tha come ith mandrake 7.0...

and ideas or hints on how can fix either (both is better) problem, GREAT!

  Subject: [newbie] Cable Modem

I need some help getting my LM 7.0 machine to connect to the
internet using a cable modem. My ISP (Time Warner) uses DHCP. I
currently have a second PC that uses the connection that runs win98. In
an ideal situation I would like to network the 2 PC's via a hub so they could
share the cable connection to the internet. For now though I would just
be happy to get the Mandrake PC to connect.
  Thanks in advance, Michael
  Seymour

  No problem.
If you are using ics program in windows98 which
acts as an router use static ip on windows machine 192.168.0.1.
Your linux box default gateway should be the same
as windows machine. I have similar set up on my 5 workstation
  network.
