Re: [newbie] LM9 sound
On Sunday 13 October 2002 07:10 pm, Damian wrote: I may be wrong, but AFAIK: This is because Linux uses the little cable that goes from CDROM to soundcard to play audio CD's. (this means no messing with drivers or anything. the CD is played in a standalone mode on the CDROM, and the sound is sent right into the sound card's internal sound input.) Now, for playing MP3, it is a completely different story, since the MP3 audio is data that has to be read, processed, and sent thru the system bus to be played by the soundcard. This requires a working configuration (drivers for the soundcard being the main issue). This idea sounds like a winner. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] Constant computer crashes
Thanks for your help with this. I really appreciate this. I just bought this machine a couple of months ago. I want to mention also that I have a dual boot with Win95 and that seems to do fine. Do you think the text file I downloaded would help? I do not know what to do with it. Thanks again. I am coming in extremely late to this thread, so if I'm repeating anything, I apologize. 1.) Remove all non-necessary components (modem, sound card, network card, etc.) 2.) Restart system and do normal things...If crashes persist, remove all ram but one stick and/or swap in spare ram (if you have it) 3.) Continue slimming down the possible variables until you check all of your hardware. If it comes to it, replace your motherboard and/or power supply and test again. Of course, if you're not comfortable with this, you might be stuck. Fiddling with settings is all well and good, but it usually masks hardware problems. Only when the hardware is excluded as the problem, can the software be tinkered with. Just my .02, Brendan Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

Re: [newbie] Console Mail Readers
Yeah, it uses Pico for its' editing, but is really not bad for all-around ASCII mail handling. Large volumes of mail make Pine look like driving a Model T on the Autobahn though. Just not capable (realistically) of sorting through large chunks of mail. Besides, Pine Is Not Elm. The major difference between Pine and Elm is that Pine has its own, simple, editor for writing emails. Elm uses vi (or whatever else you want to set up in the config file). While I'm here, I have a question about console based mail readers. For the people that use them, how do you keep up with large amounts of mail in a short time, like this mailing list? I originally started using elm and found that it was such a pain to keep on top of my mail and keep it organized that I switched over to kmail. I use Eudora on Windows and Kmail on Linux, so a console-based reader seems positively anemic for me, sometimes. The lack of the mouse, for sorting through large chunks of mail doesn't work for me. Pine is great for xterms and when you can only dial in over a modem to your system. I also hacked together a quick way to access my Eudora mail from Pine. 1.) Create a folder in Pine 2.) shell out to the system and cat the contents of your Eudora mailbox onto the tail end of the Pine folder entry, like this: 'cat foo.mbx pinefoofolder' 3.) Go into Pine and open up that folder, it should contain all of the mail from Eudora. Re: [newbie] WIll this thread end?? lol
OK, time for my 2 cents, lol I always enjoy having a Linux box--connecting a LAN to the internet is so stable that way! I also enjoy the *wealth* of apps available for Windows. Each OS has different consumers, and end uses in mind--the only real solution I've ever seen is to have at least two computers--one with Linux, and one with Windows. Each has it's strengths and weaknesses. Linux has gained on Windows for ease of use and installation in the last few years. WIndows, IMHO, has improved over the years. It's not perfect. Linux is not easy (but getting there very fast.). As my Canadian guest has said, the OS that combines the best of both, will win. And if you want to talk dumbing down of users by OS, I think Mac takes the cake for *that* one! Brendan K Callahan, Grinnell, IA, US K0EES, Extra Class License http://www.mp3.com/darkmare_romeo K0EES, Extra Class License dahdidah dahdahdahdahdah dit dit dididit With Linux you will spend more time trying to get things up and going than you ever would using windows. If you want to wast your hartbeats getting LINUX to do stuff that windows does right out of the box so be it. You are delusional!!! StarOffice opens much faster, saves faster, etc. Under Linux. GIMP is faster than Photoshop. Not to mention I never had to shutdown Linux since I installed it as my primary OS. Sure, you have to work on Linux to learn it, but Windows is like AOL - the dumbing down of America. Let's end this thread, and if you want to praise Windows go find a new mailing list!
