[newbie] Time changes

2002-01-30 Thread Carl Kehley

Help!!! I have suddenly started to get cyclic time changes, about every
2 seconds, sometimes accompanied by video blanking, and usually a hard
lockup. This is occurring in 8.1, and also RH 7.2 and Libranet
(multiple boot machine, along with Win98SE), but Windows is not
affected. What should I be looking for? It seems obviously to be a
hardware problem, but what? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

[newbie] 8.0 installation

2001-03-29 Thread Carl Kehley

Anyone else running into these problems? Running the installer from
the cd, I get an error "second stage ramdisk not uncompressed", hit
enter to continue. After that, I can get to the partitioning, where I
cannot get the installer to recognize the swap partition (running Win98,
Mandrake 7.2, and Red Hat 6.2), it keeps giving me an invalid argument
error, not recognizing the correct swap partition. If I make it through
this by not selecting any partitions to format, I then get an error
stating a missing basesystem file. Bad download, bad burn, hardware
conflicts?

Open to any and all suggestions.

I don't really know which is more annoying-the autoreply, or the
poor spelling.

I have had my legal department look at what constitutes 'SPAM' and in

Re: [newbie] Mouseman plus

2000-12-03 Thread Carl Kehley

Dale,

Same problem here. It seems to be a bug in the software. Go to level 3, run
mouseconfig, and reboot. Your mouse will be working properly, but it will
probably still be listed as as a generic.

thing: For some reason, when I select mouseman plus hardware

anything. It still says that my mouse is just the generic three button
mouse. If I double-click on the mouseman plus selection, it closes the

actually change the configuration to be that mouse!!?!? Thanks in

[newbie] Mandrake Update

2000-11-11 Thread Carl Kehley

Help, this is getting very frustrating. Bought the Walmart 7.2,
Mandrake Update worked. Upgraded to newer version of the updater,
updated grpmi, and can't get any updates. The updater goes through the
routine, flashes, and then updates the information for all the stuff I
can't get. Strange--but it gets worse. Got the download version
from a friend, installed, and got the exact same routine as above.
Uninstalled the updater, reinstalled the Walmart version, and got one
updated package listed-yes, folks, the one for the Mandrake Update,
with a message saying I would need this version for all further updates,
along with the latest grpmi package. Did both as suggested, and now
we're back to the invisible packages again, along with their updated
information. The development updates list just fine. Anybody else
having this problem, or am I just losing my mind?

[newbie] Problems with Mandrake 7.1 installation

2000-06-12 Thread Carl Kehley

I just installed Mandrake 7.1 yesterday, development install from
install and ext. cd's, and I've got a few minor problems. Any help
would be greatly appreciated.

First, Mandrake refuses to recognize my mouse as Logitech MouseMan+,
and instead keeps calling it a generic PS2. I've changed it in the
mouseconfig in DrakConf, it's recognized correctly in Lothar, but I've
got no support for the wheel(even as a third button).

Next, gnome-ppp--what is meant by "remote name" in the config? I've
set it up exactly the same as kppp, but it disconnects about 30 seconds
after the handshake, and I've got no dns, even though everything is
entered correctly.

Finally, there seem to be major conflicts between the RealPlayer 7
Netscape plugin and plugger in Communicator, to the point where
RealPlayer freezes and I've got to reboot to get my sound back. I
remember seeing something similar in the list last week, but I didn't
save the message, and can't locate it in the archives.

Any help, advice, creative criticism gladly accepted.

Thanks in advance,

Mike,

XMMS does a fine job of it, and it is included on the distribution. Just set it up
for the mime type in your Netscape preferences, under applications, and you'll be
done. There are (or at least were) instructions for the setup on the xmms

Pat,

I had something similar happen today. I corrected it by running the
installation, choosing upgrade, custom, normal, and then letting the
installer do the X configuration again. I had mistakenly changed my
video preferences, and the flashing screen was an indication that the
requested screen resolution could not be loaded. It may work for your

Brian,

I had the same problem in 7.0, and solved it by configuring the cd-rom in the

the device name is correct, and once you have that, it should configure the
