Re: [newbie] Home recording with Linux?

2000-04-05 Thread Donny

Sorry to say, don't expect to get alot done without reading a ton, and
learning how stuff works!

Most of the linux installs are VERY easy if you know a little about what
your doing and what everything means. (thus, the reading part). Its very
easy to set linux up on your second 2gig drive and dual boot
win/linux. What parts of the install were you having trouble with?
Mandrake and redhat install almost the same. (Different interfaces is the
only real difference)

If you dont want to learn linux, than it isn't your OS.

For audio editing, i recommend BeOS. Its an OS designed for audio/video
editing. They just released it free to download (40mb). Its brainless to
install and use, however not as functional as Linux/Windows. But it is very
stable. Give BeOS a try at http://www.free.be.com if you dont wanna read
about linux.

Firstly, does anyone know of any good software packages for this purpose? I
currently use Cool Edit Pro with Windoze. A chap in Germany told me he had
heard of 'SWave' (apparently similar to WaveLab). I use .wav files for all
my recording.
Secondly (and the BIG one!), installing. Can I load Mandrake 7 on my 2nd

completely and also Caldera Open Linux. This one was a little more
successful but I still gave up. It seems to me that you need to be capable

[newbie] Netscrape trouble

2000-04-04 Thread Donny

ARGH!

Every linux I've tried, after using it for awhile, when I run netscape
communicator, it will come it with no icons, no anything. At the bottom it will
say "reading file" but thats it. The only way to get rid of it, is to
annihilate the window.

Netscape navigator works fine in spite of this, but its only when I run the
communicator.

Thanks in advance!!,

Hey everyone.

In all the previous version of linux I've used, i have been able to set up
my network perfectly fine. Well in drake 7.0, i set it up in Linuxconf, and
i get no network. The NIC comes on, and is initialized, but i cant ping,
or be pinged.

What would cause this? I know the NIC and connection is fine, becuz
windows works fine with it, on the same computer.

Thanks alot in advance!! I've been workin on this since drake 7 came out,
and i STILL havent solved it!!

Where i live u have one choice in phone company's, ive tried EVERY ISP and
i still connect at 28.8. Whiner's?? I dont think so! I come to check my
mail, and just to see if someone usefull mailed me, i have to wait 15
minutes to download it.

I would care less if I was on DSL, but that isnt the case.

I think its called common sense.

If your ISP connect is so bad ie: crappy ISP, worse phone lines, or a 28.8
modem...all of these can be fixed fairly easily...the easiest would be
 to but
a $40.00 hardware modem from Cirrus Logic or some other Co., and
 probably sign
with a new ISP...even the phone lines can be upgraded if you complain
 to your
  TelCO enuff.

Unfortunately some of us have no choice as to our telephone company.
Things are
changing here in the UK but BT still have the lion's share of the market.
I run
a 56K ISA modem and there's nothing wrong with the telephone lines. It doesn't
matter which ISP one uses here - they all give about the same performance. We
can install an ISDN line but that's very expensive.

I'm therefore stuck with about 4kb/sec download speed which means about 11
minutes to download that actual file.

If anyone knows of a way to set kmail to reject large files I'd be grateful.

I've already accepted that I was a little harsh but, as the rules have now
been
changed, it should never (never say never) happen again.

As to posting in html - kmail doesn't really like it.

  Hey everyone!

  OK, heres my weird story:

I have a home network, with windowz NT as a domain controller. I was
always able to get linux up and running on the network, using "linuxconf".
Well i had to re-install NT. This happened the day before my Mandrake 7
arrived in the mail. I get NT up and goin, and now I go to install Linux.
I
set up the network stuff, and low and behold, no network!! I cant even
ping
other computers, and they cant ping the linux box. So i figure, "Hey, it
must be Linux's fault", so i put redhat 6.1 on, and still get the same
problem.

This has me sooo confused!! Is Linux or NT the problem??

  Please help!!!

  Thanks alot in advance!

Its resulted in me re-installing mandrake 6.1 a number of times, and the same
thing happened in redhat 6.1.

On occation, ive had to restart, unproperly...
without using the reboot command. Ive had to do this when it locks up or
something.

When i reboot, X wont start. So i have to boot into
runlevel 3 to get to the console. When i run startx from the console, it gives
the error:

I would make your linux box the gateway. Ditch Wingate and make your
Windows
machine go through your linux box.

Read the man page and the HOWTO for ipchains. It explains it pretty
clearly.

 Donny,

the easiest way is to assign whatever your wingate computer's ethernet
card address as the proxy address in your browser and email program. I
did the same thing with my cable modem connection and it worked fine.
everything using wingate as a proxy should use port 80. I was not able
to configure my system to use ftp, but everything else worked fine. I
agree that making your linux box is a better idea, but I have never been
able to get 2 ethernet cards to work right in linux, so I use an NT box
and Sygate to connect my network to the net.

I see. In that case, go to www.wingate.com and poke through their
knowledge

For FTP, etc. Settin up Wingate could be a bit tricky. If you have the
version
3.whatever, I guess you're having trouble with the Wingatge Client.

Re: [newbie] Netscape Fonts

1999-09-24 Thread Donny

There is only ONE way to make netscape in Linux
look totally awesum. Install you windowz fonts in Linux.

To do this:
1. Copy windows TT fonts to
/usr/lib/X11/fonts/ttfonts
2. Run "ttmkfdir fonts.dir" from the above
directory.
3. Edit the resulting fonts.dir file so it only
includes iso-8859-1 char set fonts. Also be sure to change the first line of
fonts.dir to show the actual number of fonts u have listed. You can run "wc -l
fonts.dir" to count them.
4. Save fonts.dir of course
5. Reboot or re-start the font server
6. In netscape, choose True-Type fonts and sized
you wish. Leave font-scaling un-checked. Also check use document specified
fonts, including dynamic fonts.

That will make netscape display beautiffully, and I
recommend everyone does that.

No, because they're for SPARC processors and we can't emulate them.
Any attempt to emulate them would be painfully slow (because they're

Hey everyone! Im having some terrible modem problems! My modem
recently got fried by lightning... and the new one i got to replace it, turned

Well, i got the latest version (1.8) of ISAPNP. Linux sees my
modem (i think). IM using KPPP to dial up my ISP, but when it initializes the
modem withthe string ATZ, it waits for the response OK... it never gets it. I
can go edit the modem commands, and take out the "OK" response. Now it passes
the initialization, and starts to dial out. After it finishes dialing and
connection, it stops at "waiting for response: CONNECT"

PLEASE HELP! Whats the problem? Are the responses set wrong?
Or is it something else? Thanks for your time!
