[newbie] usb iomega cdrw

2003-11-26 Thread Dooggie
Hi

I finally got Mandrake 9.0 to recognize the drive(I don't know how). What can
I do to prevent it from not recognizing it again?

Also, do I need to mount the drive so I can start using it?

Thanks
Dooggie

I am new to linux and I don't know how to use supermount.
I am trying to convert from windows to linux, but very frustrating.

Thanks in advance.

It all depends on whether you are using supermount or not. If you are using
supermount it will mount the drive when it is attached.

Now, I also suggest that you learn to read the kernel messages in
/var/log/messages by using the command tail -f /var/log/messages at a
root command prompt. Now, disconnect the drive. You should see the USB
system let go of the drive. Now, reconnect the drive, you should see it
identify and grab the drive to use.

The USB system for linux is not hard to use, so don't get freaked out.

 Rob

My box always froze at finding module dependancies when booting. I
waited a minute or so then hit the SysReq key and it continued (spitting
out something about hwclock line such and such rc.sysinit.

Something about my hardwareclock it doesn't like. I ended up having to
comment out a section in rc.sysinit and halt otherwise it just plain
refused to boot/shutdown cleanly. Just out of curiosity, what
motherboard do you have? Mine's an ASUS A7V (amd 750 processor)

 Jerry
I too have a ASUS A7V (amd duran processor)...
I am very new to linux...where can I find rc.sysinit?
Did that help? Are you able to use your cdrw?

Where is the card mounted? Or is it a built in ethernet card? Looks like
a
possible IRQ conflict. So if it is a plugin card move it to a new PCI slot
but not the one next to the AGP slot. If it is not a plugin card move one
of
your other cards or change a slot IRQ and see if the bugger comes up.
You
can do an ifup eth0 in a su console also and see what happens. HTH

In your console, as root, type drakconnect. This launches the
network wizard. Try that, and report back. Anyway, having a
network card usually means that the system connects during the
boot process. If that's not the case, try typing dmesg in a
console, and study any errors concerning the network.
