Re: [newbie] linux world magazine resource DVD with mandrake 9.1 on it

2003-09-12 Thread DrewMartin

Hello,
 You want to
check that the DVD has the .iso files on it.In the UK quite often you have to
copy the .iso images of the DVD on to your H/D,then burn them to CD to install
the OS.

[newbie] Virus

2003-09-07 Thread DrewMartin
Hi All,
Before this turns into a flame war between those of us how still
use Windows to some degree(or are forced to for various reasons).
It is a well know fact that the script kiddies who write these
insidious pieces of code only do so, because Windows is such a wide spread
OS in the world out there.If/when Linux(or Macs) become the OS of choice for
the world at large, then the will start writing viri for these OS's too.
Yes I do know for a virus to have full affect in Linux you must be
running as root, but some clever bastard out there will one day work out how
to rip thought that level of secretly.

Re: [newbie] Did I lose my NTFS partition?

2003-09-05 Thread DrewMartin
Mathieu,
First off is there any thing you need on the Windows partion? If
there is try running Knoppix from CD-ROM,this will see all partion on your
hard drive and let you copy the files to disc or to a FTP server for
storage.Do the same for the stuff on Mandrake.
Re-install XP,let sort out the complete Hard Drive and repair the
MBR,so you just have XP running.Scandisk and Defrag a couple of times,to try
and sort out the files, cause they will be in a complete mess.I think because
you have a 30 Gig drive you may be able to change it to Fat 32 during the
install, cause any thing over 32 Gig ,XP will turn into a NTFS drive.
Grab a copy of Partion Magic 8,shrink the Windows partion down to
the size you then need,do not use PM8 to help with the Linux install. This
all done by PM8 and works very well(I have used it myself and done it this
way).
Boot from the Mandrake Install disc and install to free space, when
prompted.LILO is installed by default, just save it to the MBR,all will
work(maybe).

Subject: [newbie] Did I lose my NTFS partition?

 Hi everybody!

I have a Toshiba laptop with Windows XP installed on a 30GB hard drive
(with a single NTFS partition). I wanted to install Mandrake 9.1 with
dual boot handled by LILO. I therefore installed Mandrake with the
resize Windows partition option. However, it looks like I've lost
everything that was on this partition. Is it because, during a resize,
only data on a FAT partition can be preserved, and not with NTFS?

When I do an ls /mnt/windows, it gives the error ls: reading
directory /mnt/windows: Input/output error. Also, when I boot with a
DOS boot disk, I can not even see any drive letter (such as C:, D:...)
but only the floppy drive A:

So I guess the other part of my question is, if I want to reinstall
Windows XP, how can I get back my C: drive letter in the first place?

Thanks in advance for any pointer,

 Best regards,

 Mathieu.

Re: [newbie] Re: WineX -- Update!

2003-08-27 Thread DrewMartin
Hi All.
I had this problem with XP,it's caused by XP producing/seeing
non-existent files,The only way I could dual-boot was to shink the drive
with PM8,and then install Mandrake to free space.
I have no idea if this will work for you,due to your daughter have a
pre-installed version of XP,and the makers now put the restore points on
hidden partions(which may be distoryed in the process of shinking the
drive).
The saftest method will to put a 2nd drive(but will this invaladate
any warrities you have?)I you look in the arkives from a few months ago,you
will see the sad sorry story.

There is a new version of Opera it's on their Website, and

[newbie] Mplayer

2003-06-23 Thread DrewMartin
Hello All,
I tried to install Mplayer from the mplayer website, but ended
up going round in circles(using the RPM's for Redhat),i.e. one would not
install without the other, but could not install the other one first.
Went to the Mandrake site the only RPM's where on the club
site, which I can not afford to join at this moment in time.I don't want to
try using Tarball's quite yet, because my base Linux skills are not that good
yet.
Can any one help me to find a version of Mplayer that will work
with MDK 9.1,but does not take loads of knowledge to install.
   Cheers,
Drew

[newbie] Boot in root desktop

2003-06-04 Thread DrewMartin
Hi All,
I'm having problems installing new software.I download the
Tarball,SU into root from a console.Untar to a temp folder,but the programs
don't go to my start up(they end up in my home folder),and when I try to use
them they work, but will not save the work as a usable file.I end up with a
open with box that does not hold the program name,so I can't use the file.
Do I need to boot to Root Desktop to make them work when I install
them, and how do I do this?
Also I have found I can send mail from Evolution, but not from Kmail, but both
will receive with no problems,I have looked at the help files and got
nowhere, the mail is sent but never ends up where it is going i.e. this list.
  Cheers,
 Drew.

Thanks to everyone who offered ideas. The solution is to edit the OOo
startup script (/opt/OpenOffice.org1.0/program/soffice) and add this
line:

unset SESSION_MANAGER

That fixes it. Gory details at:
