Re: [newbie] Good Programming Editor

I don't know how you would do that with Moonshine unless you had access to
your file through NFS or SMB. If the files are on your own server I would
recommend configuring one of those to gain access to your files on the server.

[newbie] Strange messages in my log files.

1999-12-19 Thread Eric L. Damron

I found this in my /var/log/messages log:

kernel: ip_masq_ftp OUT: got PASV

I find no indication that anything was transfered in the

This is on a home server and I know for a fact that my family
and I haven't been using FTP. In fact no one was logged on at the time of
the message. Could this be an indication that someone is using my server
as a WAREZ site?

Re: [newbie] How do I turn in a hacker?

1999-10-07 Thread Eric L. Damron

Thanks Steve,

I have a zero tolerance for probing. One person pointed out to me that
because this guy has a fixed IP address and would therefore have to be a
moron to try cracking into other computers from his IP address, it is likely
that the computer with this address has been cracked and is being used by
the "Dark Side."

Anyway, I didn't have any luck with whois, so I have no way of turning him
in or warning him.

Unless this is happening frequently, I'd cool my jets on the "hacker"
(BTW, the term is cracker, not hacker).

One probe does not a hack make.

As for contacting his ISP, use whois to lookup InterNIC information on
the domain, find out who his providers are, then contact them.

Please only start one thread on a subject. Did you see what Steve Philip
wrote? He said turn off Sendmail for a starter. Please listen and don't
panic.
If you don't know how to shut off sendmail, from command line type "setup"
and choose "system services" from the menu. Then uncheck the sendmail
daemon in the list of service launched at startup. You may need to
restart or kill the sendmail daemon next.
I believe you can "psaux" from command line to show all processes running
and look for the ID number of the sendmail daemon. Then issue the
"kill -sendmail ID#" and I think this will do it.
Brian
P.S. I'm new too, but I read a lot before I started surfing as root and
allowed someone to "get root"
Good Luck

setting it up is not to difficult if your comfortable with Linux, but if
your
completely green it will be tough. Go to this site and download the .pdf
file
that covers web database set up (www.sfu.ca/~yzhang/linux). You will have
to
RTFM, but it's a good how-to that covers it well without to much overhead.
He also has a good how-to on samba, setting up a webmail service, ip masq,
and
apache+mod_ssl+php. I remember a failure when building one of the packages
using this guide, but it was an easy fix. I you run into it drop me a line.

Go ahead and download and build apache as per the guide, don't use the
pre-built
one from mandrake.

Good luck, let me know if I can help. By the way what are your plans with
php3?

Downloaded it with winblows? It should be php-3.0.9.tar.gz. You should go
download the newest tar file "3.0.12" from php.net, and while your there
RTFM.

Note: It may be installed on your sys already. Run "rpm -q php"

In the future go to a real software database site (freshmeat.net), that has
the
current tar files for any given software package.
