[newbie] Mozilla spell checker

2001-06-29 Thread Francois Swanepoel

Hi

I have just downloaded Mandrake Freq 20010619 and installed mozilla
0.9.1 from these CD's. (Uninstalled 0.8.x first)
Now the spell checker in message composition is missing.
I messed around with aspell/pspell to try and get spelling to work in
Evolution, so if mozilla uses that the spelling might not work.
If it doesn't use pspell where is the spell checker?

Thanks
Francois

[newbie] Server specs

2000-10-23 Thread Francois Swanepoel

Hi all
We aim to setup a proof-of-concept linux-based
department server which can cater for 5-50 users, which can provide
  at least the following services:
  - mail (SMTP + IMAP)
  - file server (windows clients)
  - print server (windows clients)
  - fax server (windows clients)

Can anyone recommend the minimum hardware platform we can run this on?
If some of you have implemented such a server, what are the hardware specs
and how well does Mandrake perform?
Is it better to go for a uni- or multiprocessor machine?

Thanks
Francois

Re: [newbie] windows porting question

2000-09-18 Thread Francois Swanepoel

Have a look at wine. It lets you run windows programs with varying
success under Linux.
Ultimately you can try VMWare. This will cost you an arm and a leg
though.

Cheers

[newbie] ncftpget firewall problem

2000-09-14 Thread Francois Swanepoel

Hi
I am using Mandrake 7.1 and ncftp-3.0.1-2mdk.
When accessing external web sites we need to go through a firewall
requiring authentication.
I have set up the ~/.ncftp/firewall file and using ncftp works fine.
However when using ncftpget it does not seem to use this file at all and
fails with the following error message:

[.ncftp]$ ncftpget ftp.wustl.edu /pub/README
ftp.wustl.edu: unknown host.
ncftpget: cannot open ftp.wustl.edu: unknown host.

Below is the output from using ncftp command.
[.ncftp]$ ncftp ftp.wustl.edu

I have read the man pages and searched the net, but no luck.
Am I missing some config setting or does ncftpget not work through
firewalls?

Thanks

Re: [[newbie] Athlon thunderbird ka7-100]

2000-09-14 Thread Francois Swanepoel

I use a PIII 500 with 64Mb of RAM. Starting up SO does take some time,
but I can handle that.
The problem is trying to do anything else on your computer, e.g.. use
Netscape. Once you change applications your disk starts swapping and
never stops.
I use VMware and Win95 with Office97. This uses less memory and is
'quicker' than using Staroffice.
Maybe I should buy some more RAM and give Staroffice another go.

All this about Star Office got me curious, so I timed it:

  System:
  AMD K6-3, 400
  Asus p5A-b
  RAM = 192 (64 + 128 )
  HDA = WD 13.6GB
  HDB = WD 30.7GB
  SWAP = 128mb
OS = SUSE 6.4 - "Practically Everything" option (HDA is almost full)

So, from starting to move the cursor to the KDE panel icon to Star
Office fully up was: 20.3 seconds.

Still, I firmly believe in one fundamental law of computing:

There's no such a thing as too much hard drive space or too much RAM.

I would give you exact times for mine, but I recently re-installed Linux
and have not bothered to re-install StarOffice.
I do remember from previous timings that from clicking on the icon to
being able to use it was 3 or 4 minutes. It took 60 seconds just to get
 the splash screen...

 Ozz.
