Re: [newbie] file permission
you got me curious since i couldn't find the answer as easily as i thought i would *g* i went to google and did a search for file attributes linux and came across a link to the 'chattr' man page. the following excerpt is, i believe, what you're looking for... When a file with the `S' attribute set is modified, the changes are written synchronously on the disk; this is equivalent to the `sync' mount option applied to a subset of the files. in other words, this apparently ensures any changes to this file are immediately written to disk rather than waiting for sync to do it according to its schedule. i didn't read the entire manpage so you might want to make sure i didn't miss something relevant. [newbie] Swap
I have a humnm I think 60M of swap partition. I did this because I chose workstation installation and automatically assigns this number. My question is : How do I change this to a 100M for example?
Re: [newbie] Swap
I don't think PM from PowerQuest works on linux. I have linux on my drive. I don't have anything that resembles windows. I know there is a command while in root. I remember reading it about it. I don't recall the source though. Brian Erikson wrote: JM wrote: I have a humnm I think 60M of swap partition. [newbie] scanner
If you have a scanner working successfully with 5.3, I need your help. What do I need to do, what configuration to use, etc. Thanks
Re: [newbie] Kget - Caitoo
Basically this is done this way just in case your best friend (grandmother, etc) is over your shoulder. Then nobody can see your password. You have to type it twice (using the tab key to retype it) and hitting enter. Remember that root is the chief. So this security measure is necessary. Also, be aware that once you install linux, you won't see your password when you login neither.

IT sounds difficult but you have to do it only once and you can have your machine configure just for you. Macintosh is easier at first but it crashes all the time. Iguess the process is similar to adding extensions in a mac or drivers in a pc. Linus has never crashed for me. Which makes it difficult for me to learn more (once you have it configured, it is so stable you forget what you've learn becasue there is nothing else to do) Maybe somebody can post where exactly is the source in the CD-ROM. Good luck
RE: [newbie] a suggestion needed from someone knowledgeable in Mandrake---PLEASE!!!
Maybe you need sound support in the kernel? How did you install Mandrake? Maybe you left something... Workstation installationi the best for me for now. I remember I could not get sound once (messing with the system) and I just rebuilded the kernel and when running sndconfig after that it worked. Maybe your problem is different. On Thu, 13 May 1999, you wrote: yeah right. everything being "win" is the main reason i'm trying to get out of the microsoft lockdown. no the modem is an external netgear xm128 isdn modem, bri, standard all the way around. also the sound is quite tricky. this is the second card i've tried. both times sndconfig found the correct sound card but hangs when attempting to play the sample sound. i've tried manually installing it (sndconfig --noprobe) and tried many like and unlike cards(within sndconfig), all with different values. i cannot get the sound. i've reinstalled to no avail. if someone has an ensoniq pci 1371 chipset card (i think linux calls it creative\ensoniq 1371?) and it works fine, is there a way i could just use the settings you have? i don't know. this is my 3rd day with the os. thanks for any help. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of James J. Re: [newbie] MESSAGE TO EVERYONE...
I completely agree. It was unethical and is the classical approach or way to answer when someone does not have the depth about the world surrounding us. Estoy completamente de acuerdo. No fue etica su respuesta y es el camino clasico a seguir cuando alguien no conoce o tiene un significado profundo del mundo a nuestro alrededor. Jose Alberto Abreu wrote: Guillermo Belli shared some of his thoughts about the Spanish-speaking posts: Some days ago I posted a message in spanish about a linux news site called SoloLinux (www.SoloLinux.com) in case that someone would be interested about it. Then came a couple of messages in spanish from other users, and I realyzed I wasn't the only spanish speaker here, and I answered these messages trying to help 'em. I thnik this was the beginning of all this "trouble". Sorry if I did wrong. Guillermo I am also guilty of some of the posts... Someone chided me for "this useless waste of bandwith", but I believe that there are ethical and cultural issues to handle in the "open software community", as well as technical issues. Some believe that the Internet is the ultimate freedom of speech tool... you can communicate your ideas to the world, and also learn about what many people around the world have to say... And that is mostly true... If you speak English The growth rate of the Internet (and its mighty son Linux) has skyrocketed. The obvious advantages of sharing information with people thousands of kilometers away, across continents and oceans, are enormous. But they will be ultimately limited without the contributions of the Non-English-Speaking world if we do not start looking at different languages as "waste of bandwith" Ok, maybe I was joking around on a couple of posts... Hey, forgive me! This list needs some humor as any other and I don't believe this is a waste of bandwith either... just look at all of the messages the "Microsoff Linux 98" thang generated (very good joke, BTW). Mandrake is the distribution I chose because of its ease of use, its you-don't-nead-to-be-a-nerd approach, and also because of the multilanguage support. I actually sent them a message volunteering to translate the Mandrake web-pages to Spanish, along with a suggestion to change the flag language icons with something more universal (Spanish is spoken in many, many countries). Please lets end this. I agree that English is the most spoken language in this list (and on the web in general) so I think everyone on this list should post their messages in English so that everyone can read them. But if someone has the time and inclination to post the message in English and in another language, Why bother him/her? If you are a native English speaker and have no inclination to learn another language, then I guess it's your loss. But I think that having a choice is a powerful thing, and I believe this is one of the beliefs of the Open-Software community, as well. Jose Alberto Abreu [EMAIL PROTECTED] PD.- By the way... How do you write "Linux" in Mandarin Chinese, Steve? Re: [newbie] RealPlayer
I downloaded RealPlayer and installed it. However it does not seem to work with KDE for me. It worked before using the plain RedHat. I guess I need to do someting more but I don't know what at this time.

No I'm serious. How do you start to compile (configure) the kernel in mandrake? That is...where diablos is "linux".?! IS it in /usr/src/linux...No! Where do I go to use "make xconfig"? Tell me el secreto...Por favor.
Re: [newbie] Como Hacer yo cambio el conectarse Mensaje por Linux.
Why not? Mandrake's site has translation for many languages except in Spanish. I respect all languages and people. I wrote them and they say that they were working in the problem and that they had a hard time finding tranlators. Yo me ofreci the voluntario (I offered myself as a volunteer). Hey there are only 300,000,000 speaking that language. Ey hay solamente300,000,000 hablando este lenguage

I installed an internal zip drive (ATAPI). I can use only a preformated zip. Also, the cdrom does not eject unless i log out from KDE. Thanks
