Re: [newbie] devfs log messages pse help!

2002-03-03 Thread Jeffrey Madore

I also get the DevFS errors despite reloading many times. I'm told that many
of the below troubles might be related to a devfs problem. Is there anyone
who can shine some light on what I am seeing in my log. A suggestion, a web
site, something I could read, something to try...anything. I want very much
to learn how to troubleshoot this system but am starting at ground zero and
thus haven't the faintest idea as to where to start.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Jeff

 Paul,

it would appear that there's something wrong with the program DevFS. Try
reinstalling the package containing this program and see if it continues to
 report this error.

Re: [newbie] Running slow.

2002-02-17 Thread Jeffrey Madore

I would like to say thank you to all who replied to my inquiries as to 8.1
operating slow on my P120.

I have made some notes from your comments and thus will try an older dist or
lighter X application. On the other hand I may just upgrade the
machine...things to ponder.

As to my 700Mhz machine running slugish, from scanning the system log I see
several things that raise serious questions (things that I know not the
meaning of yet) that I must address.

Thanks again to all, you have been most helpful!

Jeff

[newbie] Debugging

2002-02-14 Thread Jeffrey Madore

Greetings,

My system seems to keep going through the following gyrations. Can anyone
help me understand what is going on here? I only have one card; eth0.
Shouldn't I stop the constant probing for more? How might I do this?

What is unlink in GLOBAL? What is the meaning of [104] ?

Thanks, Jeff

[newbie] Running slow.

2002-02-14 Thread Jeffrey Madore

Greetings:

I recently installed Mandrake 8.1 on my son's machine which consists of a
120Mhz processor and 84meg of ram. It now operates deadly slow. My
understanding has been that one advantage of linux is that it runs fine on
older equipment ; that it doesn't require the horsepower, so to speak, that
other OS's like windows does.

Prior to installing Linux on my son's machine he was running windows 95. That
moved right along. He likes linux but it is dreadfully slow.

I am running a celeron @ 700Mhz with 512 Meg of ram. The speed is much better
but still slower than windows ME, which I migrated from.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining. Since I began this journey, I can't
seem to get away from my computer. Though the learning is slow, I am learning
and enjoying experimenting. On the other hand I have 3 boys in school, 3
machines networked together, and I need a stable system with reasonable speed.

Any comments would be helpful. Tnx

[newbie] Eithernet setup

2002-02-13 Thread Jeffrey Madore

Greetings all,

I recently loaded Mandrake 8.1 and I need help in configuring my system to
printer share, file share, and internet connection share, over my Linksys
10/100 network. My hardware is: celeron 700Mhz, intel 810 chipset, 512Meg ram.

The other box on my network contains a cyrix 120 Mhz, 84Meg ram. This machine
runs extremely slow with linux, compared to the prior win95 os. Any thoughts
on speeding things up would be helpful too.

So far, my attempts at getting the network running seem to cause IP
conflicts, eth0 failure, and dhcpd failure, along with many other
questionable sys log entries that may go away when I get things configured
right.

My prior experience is with windows gui only. Though I want to and am working
toward learning terminal entry, I'm not at all proficient at it yet. It seems
that the only thing I am getting really good at is reloading the operating
system! So gui based instructions or well spelled out terminal entry would be
most helpful.

Thank you for your help, Jeff

[newbie] Buss speed

2002-02-13 Thread Jeffrey Madore

In the system log there is a line that reads IDE assuming 33 Mhz... My cpu
is a celeron @ 700Mhz and I believe the buss speed is 66Mhz. My hard drive is
new WD 40G (UDMA100?) Is the 33Mhz setting slowing me down? If so, and if I
should make a change, how should I go about doing it? Please keep in mind
that I'm extreemly new to linux and terminal entry.

Thank you, Jeff
