RE: [newbie] PC-2-Phone

2000-09-21 Thread Jim Chiang

Wow. I didn't know that. Disappointing indeed.
I'm pretty sure though that it would work with Win9x and likely Win2K and
WinMe as well as NT though?

No, this hottelephone is useless to the linux community.

I have tested it and it said that you have to use
windows NT for it to work, I would suggest that
all who think it is unfair to write and express to
them that it is a good thing to support linux
browsers.

 I have a situation.

I miss using DialPad in Windoze but it isn't supported for Linux. Anyone
 know
of any alternate websites that support PC-to-Phone with Linux or any other
PC-to-Phone alternative solutions? I am running LM7.1 with all of the
latest
auto updates. I installed using the Developer Option. In advance, thank
you
very much for any and all information that you may provide me.

RE: [newbie] Um...multi boot...NOT

2000-09-20 Thread Jim Chiang

I went into the Frak Config and clicked around a bit and didn't think I did
anything but look around and then cancel... Next time I boot Grub comes up
instead of LILO? They are both installed?? So confused
I have the options now to boot to:
linux
failsafe
windows
floppy

Problem is when I select windows and then get to the W2K loader, neither
Win2K or W98 will boot. They both freeze up on the startup screens.

What the?

 I'm in trouble.

First of all, I thought 7.1 was supposed to use Grub, but when I boot I
have
 Lilo not Grub.
Also, at the boot: prompt when I hit Tab it shows:
 linux rescue

 WHERE IS WINDOWS

Jim

Did you install Lilo on the MBR or secondary boot header?
In saying that how about entering Drak Config and placing the Windows
option
on the same partition as Lilo (hda 5 or where-ever) so that it would show
when
at the Lilo prompt. This should then enable you to boot Windows.

[newbie] problems installing ip_masq_H323

2000-09-20 Thread Jim Chiang

Ok. I'm trying to install this module from source. It is to allow netmeeting
and other H323 programs to work through the firewall.
It can be found at: http://www.coritel.it/projects/sofia/nat.html

I downloaded the .c file and followed the directions on the page:
*** HOW to build the module:
- Put the file ip_masq_h323.c in the directory /usr/src/linux/net/ipv4
- Edit the file /usr/src/linux/net/ipv4/Makefile
- Modify the line to look like this:
M_OBJS += ip_masq_ftp.o ip_masq_irc.o ip_masq_raudio.o
ip_masq_quake.o ip_masq_h323.o
- Be sure to have enabled the module support in the kernel
- Issue make modules modules_install from /usr/src/linux
- Now try to insmod ip_masq_h323 and look the log file /var/log/messages
-
I did this all up to the last line where I get an error:
insmod: ip_masq_h323: no module by that name found.

All I really want to do is compile it to a .o file and copy the file to my
linux router box which is using kernel 2.2.16
I installed the updates to kernerl 2.2.16 prior to all of this as best I
could.

Where did I go wrong? What do I do now?

RE: [newbie] Hard Drives

2000-09-20 Thread Jim Chiang

Lyndon,

In windows if you have 7 GB partitions then they are FAT32 partitions. I
don't think FAT32 is subject to cluster size issues the same way FAT16 was.
i.e. I don't believe you need to worry about partitioning in windows or in
linux.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Jim

Subject: [newbie] Hard Drives

Seeing how I am going to install Linux this weekend I have a question
pertaining to multiple hard drives.
  I have 3 HD's that will be on the Linux box 6gb, 7gb 30gb. In windows I
normally partition the 30gb into 4 7gb partitions so I have smaller
clusters and am not wasting space.

Do I need to do this with the 30gb drive under Linux? Or can I just use one
partition?

Thanks Lyndon

[newbie] multiple dislpays

2000-09-19 Thread Jim Chiang

I would like to install 2 video cards in my MDK7.1 system. I have a Diamond
Fire GL 1000 AGP and an ATI Expert98 PCI. Bath are 8 MB cards.
Anyone know if I can get this to work and will it be very difficult?
I currently the system set up with an ATI Exert@Play AGP.
How should I proceed?
My plan was to swap the Expert@Play AGP for the FireGL AGP. Will I have
troubles with the first boot??
After that, how would I go about adding the second card?
Is there a how-two or something??

Thanks,
Jim

RE: [newbie] Internet server

2000-09-19 Thread Jim Chiang

If that's all you want to do than my recommendation is to use a LRP disk
instead.
Try www.coyote-linux.com
I got it installed fine on a 486/33 w/8MB. The latest release includes
support for dial-up and PPPoE connections.
Fully automated. Problem? Juts reboot and walk away.
I'm uisng PPPoE, haven't tried the dial up.

I have L/M 7.0 with pmfirewall and a 56K external modem.This boxes only
function is firewall and masquerade for my other computers. I do this
through KDE. My hope is to have this run as a stand alone. Boot up and
connect to my ISP with firewall protection automatically, no
monitor/mouse/keyboard for example when power goes out / or I shut it
down. Now I have to pick a user, enter the password, and hit connect on
kppp... I have the kppp in autostart.

Can I do this with KDE? If not could you explain just a bit? I fear it is in
console that I must go. Fear might be a bit rash...But its close.

[newbie] Where is my LAN?

How do I find my LAN?
I have a LAN with an NT server, and a couple W98, Win2K clients.
Where are they? Can I access the shared directories from Linux??

[newbie] Can't Install

2000-09-18 Thread Jim Chiang

I'm using Mandrake 7.1 which I downloaded and burned to CD.
In the graphical configuration. It gets to the Setup Filesystems and I get
an error:

An error occurred
An error has ocurred - no valid devices were found on which to create new
filesystems. Please check your hardware for the cause of the problem.

I previously installed on the exact same system, but with a different HD.
I'm now trying to do this on a 20 GB Fujitsu. The drive is fine. I just
wiped NT off of it. My MB supports the full capacity of the drive as well.
When I previuosly installed it was on a 2 GB hard drive.

Is there a problem installing with a larger capacity drive???
The 20 GB has no partitions on it. I wiped them all with Dos6.22 Fdisk
before I started.

Actually I got it worked out.
For some reason it would not work when I tried to use the boot floppy.
Booting from CD worked fine.
