[newbie] Installing Mandrake 7.2 with Window$ 2000

2001-01-23 Thread John Catral

Hello! I recently tried to install Mandrake 7.2 on my
computer that has windows 2000 on it also. Before
anything, I want to describe the setup I have.

I have 2 hardrives. The primary drive has windows
2000 on it and the second drive is for Mandrake.
Anyway, I installed Mandrake on the second drive and
everything seems fine UNTIL I was done with the
mandrake install and I had to reboot. When the
computer rebooted, I was hoping to see LILO or Grub
but instead I saw a "NTLDR Not found" error. I know
in the past that I was able to install with no
problems. I would usually get LILO and when I chose
Windoze I would get the Windoze 2000 boot menu. This
time I didnt get anything. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!

Did you get it to work? I heard that oidentd works
well with any client thats behind a router/firewall

[newbie] Fatal Server error?

2000-07-25 Thread John Catral

Hi! I was wondering what I should do to fix my problem. Everything was fine
when I last used Mandrake 7.1 but when I rebooted this afternoon, it goes to
the normal text login instead of KDM. When I log in and startx I get an
error stating that...

Fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed'

umm.. what does that mean? When I installed Mandrake 7.1 I chose to install
the XFree 100dpi fonts and I didnt install the normal 75dpi fonts. It
worked well for awhile then this happens. Is this related to the server
crash in anyway? How can I solve this?

Thanks in advance!

configure a network in the installation process, you cant access the

just keeps on redialing. The fix, is to NOT configure network for KPPP
to work. Anyone get this problem? And why does this happen?

Everyone keeps asking this question over and over and I began

problem. The last "M" as in megabytes needs to be "m". Everyone
steers wrong on this and even the documentation is wrong. I banged my
head on the wall for two weeks struggling with this issue. I have 512M
RAM and Linux only sees 64 if I don't have that line in. As we all know

Hmmm, that should be the right one.
The line for my CDRom in fstab is this:

 /mnt/cdrom /mnt/cdrom supermount fs=iso9660,dev=/dev/cdrom 0 0

I assume that sort of matches yours. Very strange that it won't work, I
have not yet heard of a CDRom that won't work in Linux.

Unlikely idea, but still: can you mount cdrom2 to /mnt/cdrom ?

 umount /mnt/cdrom
 mount /dev/cdrom2 /mnt/cdrom

Just to see if there is nothing wrong with /mnt/cdrom. If that works, try

 umount /mnt/cdrom2
 mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom2

Curious what that would give you. Stranger things have happened...
 Paul

Well, i tried mounting /dev/cdrom2 to /mnt/cdrom and it worked.
When I tried mounting /dev/cdrom to /mnt/cdrom2 I still got the same
error.."mount:/dev/cdrom is not a valid block device"

Try doing $ cat /etc/fstab and see what it says the mount

cdrom mounted as, not /cdrom but /mnt/cdrom. If fstab says

 $ cd /mnt/cdrom -- works like a charm.

   Hi,

I also have a Sound Blaster Live! card. I have
  visited the Creative Europe

  here are the results :

   Q. Will the Sound Blaster Live! work under Linux?

   A. Creative has hired and trained programmers who
  are proficient in Linux
device driver programming, and we continue to work
  on drivers for various
products, including the Sound Blaster Live!.
  There's no set release date
   yet.

If you get your card working, please let me know.

   Thanks,

Re: [newbie] Gimp v Paint Shop Pro

2000-02-12 Thread John Catral

Could anyone tell me if Gimp is an equal to Paint Shop Pro or Photo Shop
 for Windows.

I have used GIMP just for fun and I love it! Friends of mine who use it to
create graphics and edit pictures for web design all say that GIMP is
actually better than Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro. If you know a little
about programming GIMP is great coz you can add stuff immediately rather
than wait for Photoshop to release filters and available add-ons. Most of
my friends find this freedom very happy and productive. =) There must be
even a mailing list for web designers and graphic artists who use Linux for
their creative needs. =)

Re: [newbie] setting the time

2000-02-08 Thread John Catral

Heres a quick fix I tried. I clicked the Drakconf (I think thats the name
=) ) icon or run linuxconf and go into the time date setting and changed
it there. =) It worked! =)

If you are on the 'Net, su to root and try

rdate -sp time.nist.gov

That should do it.

Or put it in the crontab.

[newbie] RAM question and Time

2000-02-07 Thread John Catral

Hi! I just installed Mandrake 7 and I noticed that it is only reading 64 Mb
of my 224 Totyal RAMS I have. Is that an error that 7.0 has?

Another thing that I am perplexed about is the fact that it is giving a
qrong time. I live here in New Jersey and all my other OS' like redhat
works fine with this machine except the Mandrake 7 which is giving a wrong
time.

Anyone know of this same problem?
