What is the "tulip" driver? I didn't see anything like that in
DrakConf. Is it somewhere else?

Use the "tulip" drivers that come with Mandrake. They work perfectly with
that exact card. I'm running 3 of them on my lan with no problems

Re: [newbie] HELP! Linux stole my windows partition!!! (Thank Yous)

2000-09-06 Thread John I. Azeke

First of all (IN DEFENSE OF MYSELF):
I would just like to say that I am new to the world
of Linux. I haven't even heard the word until I started college 4 years
ago. This is now my second month of actually using the OS. I am
moving over from Windows because I am sick of being ripped off for something
that is garbage. I read a lot before deciding to try Linux and I read the
so-called "Installation and User's Guide" that only shows how to do an automatic
install, and other installation run-throughs I found on the web.

Thus said, I AM A NEWBIE. I signed up to this
list to get some help and make this transition a little easier. I read as
much about new commands and programs I use before trying them out. I did
not see anywhere in any other sort of report a section titled "What To Do If
thePartition You Were Looking at Under Linux Is No Longer Recognized by
Windows". Thus, I wrote my situation to you all to see if there were any
expert advise. I did get some very good advise from those at the bottom of
this letter, but I did also get a lot of criticism for not knowing in advance
the answers to my questions. Really, if I was at that level, I would no
longer be a member of this mailing list, would I?

Bottom Line:
Scandisk was not aware of the missing partition, so
it could not fix it.
DOS fdisk recognized the partition as
NON-DOS
cfdisk recognized the partition as WIN 95
FAT32
Norton SystemWorks also could not fix it, although
it did see it as a "root partition"

Again:
I have 2hard drives. One has 2 Windows
partitions. The other has Linux Mandrake installed. They are
completely seperate. Ther is no way my installation could have been at
fault because windows worrked fine after installation. This happened weeks
later. I think that Doug McGarrett was right and somehow the supermount
option was to blame. I upgraded my install without this option, copied the
buggy partition to Linux, reformated using DOS fdisk and dumped everything back
in. It worked and no information was lost.

I would really like to thank the following people
for giving me genuine support onfinding a solution:

1) Mark Weaver
2) Doug McGarrett
3) Goldenpi

4) Paul
5) Ed Tharp

Your help was greatly appreciated.

[newbie] HELP! Linux stole my windows partition!!!

2000-09-03 Thread John I. Azeke

I was looking at some of my windows 98 mpeg files
under L. Mandrake 7.1 yesterday and when I rebooted the computer into windows,
The partition of windows that contains all of my personal files was gone!
Confused, I went back into Mandrake and the partition was still present with all
information. I don't know why I can't see it under Windows.

When Mandrake is performing its shut down sequence,
There is a FAIL on "stopping identd services"

I have tried:
1)detecting new harware under windows... No
Good
2) unmounting the drive under Linux before
restarting... No Good

Can anyone help me?

I've been trying to get help on a Mandrake 7.1 install.
After buying the Deluxe pack and registering it for support, I still
can't get a response to my emails.
 Anyone had any luck here?

[newbie] Sound Blaster Live

2000-08-23 Thread John I. Azeke

I have been trying to install SB Live for some time
now and can't seem to get it to work. I have followed the instructions
provided with the emu10k1 drivers and have also used the instructions at
linuxnewbie.org. After installing the drivers and probing I get an "error
stating that the reference in the /misc/ folder is more recent than the file in
the modules folder. (or vice versa). I also get an error saying that
there is "no such device" for /dev/dsp0. When I was trying out mandrake,
everything worked out and now, After buying the deluxe pack and installing
everything, it won't.

RE: [newbie] I made a mistake

Try doing an
c:fdisk /mbr
after booting your system into DOS with your Windows Startup disk.

Subject: [newbie] I made a mistake

Hi,

I installed Mandrake 7.1 under windows 98 and after installation, Grub
provided a menu to choose operating system, Linux and windows. It worked
well. Later, I wanted to set windows to be default OS, So in
DrakeConf-DrakeBoot, I set the boot device from hda to hda1. Now I know I
should not set in this way, but I got a problem: The machine can only start
linux, not windows even though the windows option is still in the Grub menu
and even though I set the boot device back to hda.

I am quite new to the Linux world and don't know how to get windows back,
Could someone help me out?

[newbie] Booting Windows with LILO

2000-08-07 Thread John I. Azeke

I sent this yesterday, but have not seen it posted, so I'l try again:

Hello,

I am running Mandrake 7.1 on a Tyan Tiger 133 Dual Pentium III MB with one
800EB PIII Porcessor, 128 MB RAM, Diamond Viper V770Ultra Video. I have two
hard drives: one with two windows partitions and the other with Mandrake. I
have tried to boot windows several times, but to no avail. I only get a
"system1" message and nothing more happens. Sometimes it would say
"Starting Windows 98" and nothing more would happen.

Could someone please give me some advice on configuring LILO to allow me to
boot to windows. I used the c:fdisk /mbr command to allow windows to boot
on its own and use a Mandrake Boot Disk to boot into linux, but this gets
annoying. I would appreciate any help.

Thank You
