[newbie] Boot up modules

2000-02-26 Thread Michael C

Hi,

Whenever I log on I can play CDs but not system
sounds on my SB Live!. I have the kaudioserver and kwmsound in the
$KDEDIR/bin/startkde file but these do not seem to be started. Also, the
settings are always muted (default behaviour).

After some investigation found that snd-pcm-oss and
snd-mixer-oss (allows backward compatibility) modules are not loaded. When I
modprobe these and exec kaudioserver and kwmsound I get systems
sounds.

My question is, if I want to load these modules at
bootup, which file do I put them in ? I want to be able to use sound in all
shells.

Also, can I put the 'amixer set XXX unmute'
settings along side these ?

What is the normal convension ?

Thanks in advance,

Michael

Subject: [newbie] Kernel msg : Ran out of Input data/Out of memory

 Hi,

I thought I succesfully upgraded from linux 2.2.13 to 2.2.14, but seem to
 have run into a problem.

I have three symbolic links in the /boot directory - System.map,
module-info
and vmlinux. Originally these pointed to my 2.2.13 installation, but I
changed these to point to my 2.2.14 installation. By the way my module
file
is empty as one isn't produce when I do a 'make module_install'.

My /etc/lilo.conf file has a new entry, based on the 2.2.13 installation,
but pointing to the 2.2.14 installation.

When I reboot and start the 2.2.14 installation, I get the following
message
 :

 Uncompressing linux...

 ran of of input data

 -- System halted

I reboot again and start the 2.2.13 installation o.k. System.map is
pointed
to the current kernel version, but everything else remains unchanged.

Got this a few times, so I recompiled 2.2.14 and tried again. This time I
 got :

 Uncompressing linux...

 out of memory

 -- System halted

I have run out of ideas here. I only other thing I can tell you is that I
have to use 'make bzImage' as the zImage is to large.

 Any help would be appreciated.

 Michael

Re: [newbie] Unanswered Question

2000-02-20 Thread Michael C

Hi Hershel ,

I am new to this site so I didn't see your previous
mail.

1 Is this a reasonable plan?

You plan sounds o.k. although I have never use
fdisk. I use PartitionMagic from Windows which is safe. But I would advise you
back up your data first.

2 What do I need to do to let my Linux on D
know that I removed partitions two from C (i.e. Linux on D currently mounts
those partitions)
unmount the drives from Linux or you may see some
error messages when you next boot up (having
removed the partitions). You do this from LinuxConf.attach local drives. You
will get the list of mountable drives. Click on the ones you want and delete
them.

3 Lilo currently is able to boot into NT and
Linux on C and Linux on D. I assume that I can just edit lilo.conf to
remove the Linux on C and then run lilo -v and lilo will be
happy. Not too clued up on LILO, but that sounds o.k.

Hope it helps,

Michael

When I initially installed Linux I just used
the program that comes on the CD for partitioning

P.S. Did you get a limited version of
PartitionMagic with your CDs. If so, look at it.

[newbie] System.map

2000-02-20 Thread Michael C

Hi,

I have just succesfully downloaded, configured and compiled the linux kernel
2.2.14. I was originally using 2.2.13 that I got off the CD.

I have moved the new kernel image into the /boot directory within its own
subdirectory and updated the /etc/lilo.conf file. On booting up the computer
I get the following warning:

/boot/System.map has an incorrect kernel version.

Linux boots up o.k. except with this message being displayed a number of
times.

Can any one tell me why this is happening and how I resolve the problem ?

Thank you in advance,

Michael

[newbie] Mounting Logical Drives

2000-02-19 Thread Michael C

Hi,

I have a disk with a primary FAT32 partition (C drive) and an extended
primary partition.
The extended partition has logical drives d, e, f and g. These drives are
also FAT32.
I partitioned these using Partition Magic.

Linux (on seperate drive) can mount /dev/hdc1. This is mounted using vfat at
bootup.
Within LinuxConf I cannot seem to mount my logical drives, I have tried
/dev/hdc2, with the same
options as hdc1 but with no joy, it just won't mount. I have tried changing
settings as well.

When I exit LinuxConf, it points me to the error log that suggests that I
have too many fs mounted
(not true) or that I am trying to mount a logical partition within an
extended one, which is of
course what I am trying to do. However, it gives NO solutions, it doesn't
tell me where I am going wrong.

I have also unmounted hdc1 prior to attempting to mount hdc2 - again no
luck.

Can anyone tell me where I am going wrong.

Thank you.

Michael

[newbie] Kernal Upgrade

2000-02-19 Thread Michael C

Hi,

I have Linux Kernal 2.2.13.
I would like to upgrade this to the latest version
that supports USB, and SB Live!
I also have a USB camera and scanner that I'd like
to use.

How do I do this? Do I upgrade my Kernal level by
level (i.e. download and install the
2.2.13 patch first, followed by the 2.2.14 patches
and so on), or can I download the
latest Kernal and go straight to that.

Also, I only have a winmodem, so can I download
these files to windows and then
from Linux copy them over for installation ? I
intend to purchase an external modem
but not right now.

I currently have Linux-Mandrake 6.1 (Red Hat Linux
with enhancements).

Thanks,

Michael

Re: [newbie] Mounting Logical Drives

2000-02-19 Thread Michael C

Hi Audrey,

I could be wrong on this, but the first thing I'd check is why you are
mounting hdcX at all. If your master disk on the first ide bus is your
C drive, then it should be hdaX.

My primary IDE interface has my Linux disk attached as Master, my secondary
IDE interface has my DOS disk as Master. My CDROM is slave on one of these
interfaces. This is why my C drive is seen as /dev/hdc1 from Linux.

I also think that logical drives in
extended partitions start with the number 5. So hda5 would be your d
drive. Post your /etc/fstab. Install always messed up my logical Win
partitions and might be doing the same thing to you. That was the
 message I'd get.

You're right on the button. I double checked what you said and you are
right, you
are allowed up to 4 principal partitions (hdc1-4) on an IDE disk, any more
partitions
must be part of an extended partition and are logical drives (hdc5- ... ).

Thank you very much. Don't know why I couldn't locate the data earlier.

Re: [newbie] SBLive and kernel recompilation

2000-02-14 Thread Michael C

Hi,

I also have a Sound Blaster Live! card. I have visited the Creative Europe
site and did a search for linux under the FAQ, here are the results :

Q. Will the Sound Blaster Live! work under Linux?

A. Creative has hired and trained programmers who are proficient in Linux
device driver programming, and we continue to work on drivers for various
products, including the Sound Blaster Live!. There's no set release date
yet.

If you get your card working, please let me know.

Thanks,

Michael
