[newbie] Seeking Software...

2000-03-03 Thread Michael Haney

Are there many freeware or GNU open source applications for Linux that do
high-quality 3D rendering and animation? Also, are there any good
freeware or GNU open source apps for video editing, MOD Music Trackers,
and web cam software?

This would really help, if you know please reply and let me know where to
download. Thanks.

[newbie] Network Card Problem...Urgent!

2000-03-03 Thread Michael Haney

I have tried several ways to get my Intel PRO/100+ Management Adapter to
work in Linux-Mandrake 7.0(the downloaded version) and I have had no
success.

I downloaded the Linux drivers for my NIC from Intel's web site and
followed the instructions to install it, but I keep getting eth0
initialization [failed] at boot up. i have tried editing
/etc/conf.modules and /etc/sysconf/hwconf to reflect the new drivers but
that did not work. The newly installed drivers DO NOT show up in
Lothar, and Lothar and Linux show the card as a different model with
incorrect I/O port and IRQ settings then what Win98 shows the card
atall other devices show settings identical to what Win98 Device
Manager shows(my sound card and video card).

How can I install the drivers if Intel's instructions do not work for
Linux-Mandrake?

Intel says to extract the files from the tar.gz file...
Goto the /scr directory that will be created and run 'make'...(this
creates the modules file 'e100.o')
After that test the modules with insmod e100.o...
Install the modules with 'make install'...
Load the modules by running 'modprobe e100'...

They say the modules should install and work immediately.

If there is different way please let me know? How can I get the
driver to show up in Lothar?

I need a response soon, please
help!So sayth the Zorch!

[newbie] Do not run PrettyPark.exe

2000-03-03 Thread Michael Haney

The file 'PrettyPark.exe' is the installer for the Trojan virus
W32/Pretty.worm.unp.

This virus uses email programs to spread itself around to the first 30
people in your address book. It also transmits detailed system and
network information to the author that could be use to hack into your
computer system or LAN.

If you ran this attachment update your anti virus software to detect and
clean the virus. Then, use the attached UNDO.REG file to clean up
your Windows Registry because removing the virus will render some of your
programs useless if you just delete the virus. When you try to run
a program after removing W32/Pretty.worm.unp your system will try to
locate the file 'files32.vxd' which is the virus program. Importing
this Registry fix will correct that problem.

Good Luck.

[newbie] Ethernet Card Problem...

2000-03-01 Thread Michael Haney

Hi all!

I really love Linux-Mandrake, I used to use RedHat 6.1, but this
distribution is so much better.

I am having a trouble with my Intel PRO/100+ Management Adapter, its a
10/100Mb ethernet card with a feature that allows a remote server boot
the system via a cable connected from the NIC to the motherboard. I
downloaded the Linux drivers for the card from
www.intel.com and
followed the instructions to install the drivers.

What I did was...

Extracted the files...

Ran make

Ran isnmod modulename

Ran make install

Ran Modprobe modulename

and got no errors.

When I boot I get a 'failed' message when eth0 is being
initialized.

The module appears in the config files but so does the other module the
system ASSUME the card was the first time I install it.

Can anyone please help?

Its Linux-Mandrake 7.0 downloaded from the mirror site
ftp.linux.tucows.com
and it was installed two days ago.

At 12:20 PM 3/1/00 -0500, you wrote:

What version of Mandrake are you using, and is this a fresh installation?

I have two PRO/100+ cards in my Linux box. They were detected on installation
of Linux.
You probably need to configure eth0. I prefer the command line stuff, so I
would (as root) run

linuxconf

Select - Networking -Basic Host Information

Make sure Enabled has an X in it.
Make sure Net device is eth0
Set kernel module to eepro100

Try that.

[newbie] Ethernet Problem...

2000-03-01 Thread Michael Haney

Linux Mandrake is not initializing my Intel PRO/100+ Management
Adapter.

At the first boot up after install it did not initialize...I get a
message saying it failed.

Lothar showed the card as being configured already, and the card was set
to ppp1 with the eepro100 modules in Network Configuration. After
the first boot.

I have since downloaded and installed the Intel drivers for this card but
they are not showing up after I followed the install procedures,
but they do show up in the conf.modules file.

The module for this card according to Intel is e100.o.

This system is not meant as a server but is on an NT LAN with a T1 link
to the Internet using Static IP addresses. What would you
suggest?
