I'm going to uninstall this OS as soon as possible from my computer... I
can't stand it any longer. Linux sucks !
And I'm going to get a Microsoft Certificate and install Windows XP,
 which I have never used.
Linux has no future ! And this list sucks, too ! Fare you well !

 Hello all.
I'd like to take this chance to offer to bring a new user up to speed on
 Mandrake.
I don't consider myself an expert but would like to give a little back
to a community where I've learned so much about linux.
So, If someone needs some help learning how to get around Mandrake Linux
via Skype (voip application) I'm looking to help sometime tomorrow
afternoon EST. (not exactly sure when)
I'll turn on skype an await a call as mentioned above.

 Till then take care

I have now got Mambo installed in /var/www/ and Xampp in /opt/. I am not
sure if Mambo is working however xampp is and in a terminal window starting
xampp brings up this

Starting XAMPP for Linux 1.4.11...
XAMPP: XAMPP-Apache is already running.
XAMPP: XAMPP-MySQL is already running.
XAMPP: XAMPP-ProFTPD is already running.
XAMPP for Linux started.

I am told that I now need to create a database in MySQL for Mambo and run an
install script[?]

The instructions give '$ mysqladmin -u db_user -p create Mambo', db_user has
to be changed to a suitable name for the system. This come up 'no such
msql command'

I have tried changing to /var/www but still get the same thing.

Any thoughts please. Thanks.

Subject: [newbie] any PDA users out there?

 Hi all,
am considering purchasing a PDA, I've googled on the topic and I fast
becoming confused with all the information out there - some of which is
grossly outdated so I'm not sure what to trust. What I really need is a
testimony from someone that has one...

Does anyone on the list use a PDA?
if so have you been able to install a distro such as familiar on it?
Whether using a linux distro or its original OS, how well does it and
the apps integrate with mandrake? (eg - PIM's)

I feel comfortable with 'Palm' but would prefer to dual boot an iPaq if
possible. (I believe there is flight management/recording software
available for glider pilots on the iPaq so this would be a bonus). I see
Mandrake includes Kpilot which looks to work with the Palm - is there
 anything similar for the iPaq?

Sorry for asking so many questions - any feedback would be greatly
 appreciated.

 Thanks, Aidan.

Whilst not actually answering your question this
http://www.pocketgps.co.uk/modules.php?name=Forums may be somewhere to
start. It in fact deals with GPS systems but there are write ups on various
models and your glider package may be mentioned.

However most of these run Windows 2002/3 PPC I do not recall anyone using a
Linux setup anuless it has been installed under another name.

Good luck.

For a basic setup which in my opinion is very good, install iptables and
shorewall. This will get you started. I use iptables and firestarter
which can be found here. www.fs-security.com/
The thing to keep in mind is, iptables is what makes the rules and
shoewall or firestarter is just a front end to help you more easily
 create the rules.
There are others on this list that are far more familiar with iptables
 and shorewall than I.

 Regards,
 Dan Gordon

Yes shorewall is a good one. I appreciate Mandrake includes it. A little
confusing at first, but once we read the tutorial, it's not that hard to
setup. And Tom Eastep - the writer - is very active in the shorewall list.
However, don't be offended by his sharp words though (especially when he
knows we use mandrake) :) He's actually a very nice person, really :) His
sharp words come because he's also a good writer on the documentation, so our
problem regarding shorewall mostly has been covered in it.

However, now I'm quite oriented to avoid Wine installation if possible,
i.e. if OO Writer can really work fine onto .doc files,
especially now that you pointed out the problem of viruses.
And apart from that, I don't much like the idea of having an

I'll be going on experimenting OO Writer, thanks indeed,

Hello,

If you have now 'gone off' Wine, have you thought of using Cross Over

Hi.

Does anybody have any experience about Wine, how to install it and how to
make it work?
I've had problems with it, and the help I got from the wine-users mailing
list didn't manage to solve them.
I installed Wine in order to run MS Word with it,
since *unfortunately* in job applications it is usually requested and used
the .doc format
and neither kword nor Open Office kwriter nor even abiword manage to
properly read and edit MS Word documents.
The installation seems to have been successful, but I don't manage to run
WinWord nor do I really know how to run it.
Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Rodolfo

Hello,
When you say that the installation has been successful, does that mean just
wine or the MS programme as well?
