There is an excellent Mini-HOWTO on font deuglification that comes with the
distribution. It tells you how to set up and use TrueType fonts in Linux. I
followed the instructions last night and the results are much better.

All you have to do is set the fonts to something more readable in both
style and size. that can be done in the preferences.

[newbie] XFree86 driver Settings for SiS 620

2000-10-29 Thread Ot Ratsaphong

Greetings from Australia,

I'm hoping someone can help or point me in the right direction.

I have just installed L-MDK 7.2b3. The install was very smooth.

My Hardware configuration:
Motherboard: PCChips100 - M748LMRT
Onboard Video Chip: SiS 620
CPU: Celeron 400
SDRAM: 64Mb
Video RAM: 2Mb (I have tried setting Video RAM to 4MB)
Screen Resolution: 1024 x 778, 16bit colour

The problem/challenge that I've got:

Once the X login screen comes up, I notice vertical streaks on the screen.
When I've logged in I get vertical streaks at set intervals on the screen.

On the left edge of the screen, there is a thin vertical area where I can
see a part of what is in the main screen. This happens with all Windows
Managers that I've tried (KDE, Gnome and Sawfish). So this suggests that the
problem may be something to do with the X server settings.

I have checked the XFree86 website and the X 4.01 supports my video driver.

I have not experienced this problem with L-MDK 7.0 and XFree86 3.3.6. SVGA
driver.

The problem is not critical, an annoyance more than anything. I like Linux
and am keen to use it as my main desktop but little thing like this make
Linux look really flaky.

Alternative, would someone please tell me how I can revert back to X 3.3.6.

Thanks,
Ot Ratsaphong

I agree. It sounds like they don't support Linux but at www.linmodems.org
the fact that they have released pctel.o suggested that it is possible to
get the pctel modem to work on linux.

Here is a FAQ from the PCTel web site. To me it says that you have a Win
NoModem but you can judge for yourself.

Can I use my modem with Operating systems other than Windows 95?

Yes! PCTEL HSP technology operates in all Windows operating systems. These
include Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0 and Windows CE. PCTEL
currently has no plans to run on the DOS, UNIX, or Linux operating systems.
We support most DOS based programs in the DOS Box under Windows 95.

Hi bascule,

If you have a look at the following URL, you will find all you need to get
you going. I followed the instructions to get my 486 configured as a router
and firewall for my small home network.

http://members.home.net/ipmasq/ipmasq-HOWTO-1.82.html

I have a question for you:

I have a 486/66 VL-bus PC with 32MB RAM and a Trident Video card. I have not
been able to install anything after RedHat 5.2. I'm interested in upgrading
to MDK 7.02 486 and am interested to hear that you have been successful at
it. Can you tell me if your H/w is similar to mine?

Thanks,

Subject: [newbie] networking question

i am having trouble setting up two machines to talk to each other, i'll
put all the questions in this one post since they are all related,

1) do i need to 'fake' a domain for both machines to belong to or is it
enough to give each machine a name?
2)is the ip address of each nic the same as each machine or is that
different? (i ask because i know that one machine could have more than
one nic)
3)do i need a default gateway or to set up any routing info if i only
have two machines connected via a hub?
4)i know about the reserved ip addresses but does it matter which
address in an allowed range is used? i have used 192.168.0.1 on one box
and 192.168.0.2 on the other
5)what other quiestions should i have asked?!

i have never connected two machines before, i have read a couple of
books but they are a little over my head and seem to assume a lot, my
machines both run mandrake 7-02 one is a 486 and one is an amdk6-2 400,
i have installed a netgear ea201 in each machine and according to the
diagnostic disk provided both are setup ok. of course until i know that
linux is configured properly in both machines i won't know this for
sure,

any answers, recommended books, urls gratefully received,

it is my intention to one day have the 486 machine be a firewall, i
perceive that one day the uk will have reasonably priced unmetered isp
access and i want to be ready!

Hmmm...

I don't have a SCSI interface card so I've not had to find out but there are
many ways you can find out.

1. Check with your PC supplier. He might be able to help you.

2. If you have Windows installed, Start up the control Panel. Double-Click
on the System Icon. Click on the Device Manager Tab and see if you can find
any reference to a SCAI device.

Re: [newbie] Worthless email list

Hi Fran,

Thanks for your response. This is exactly what I've been missing. For some
reason, the DPMS is missing from my control Center in MDK 7.0. I know I had
it in MDK 6.1, I'll have another look. At least I know that it is still
available in MDK 7.0.

I did a standard Developer workstation install and I was so impressed that
it detected all my hardware (I have one of those all-in-one motherboards
that Linux used to have trouble detecting).

Puzzled,

Hi Ot,

I don't know if this is what you are looking for but if you look at the
KDE control Center under the desktop icon, there is a section called
DPMS. I am not sure if it is what you are looking for, but you can
enable that and it has standby, suspend, off time and a slider to choose
the time, and a test button for each.

Hope that helps,
Bambi

Re: [newbie] Worthless email list - dpms

2000-06-12 Thread Ot Ratsaphong

Just letting you know that I re-installed MDK 7.0 and found out that the
installation had not installed the kdpms package. This time I made sure that
it was installed and now dpms is shown on the Control Center.

When installing in Expert mode, it is best to go back over the selected
packeges to ensure that all selected packages are still on the list. The GUI
installation package seems to have a nasty way of unselecting pagkages that
have been selected for installation.

Cheers,

That is great...glad to be of help.

You were luckier than I with the hardware detect.
I have a VIA chipset...that should say it all, I think :)
But fortunately my husband has been in Linux about
6mos to a year longer than I and he understands the
guts of it much better than I do on the hardware side
and got it to work ... by getting both windows98
and Linux to agree on the settings they will use,
then preventing Windows from using automatic
settings and uninstalling the ISNPNP after Linux
settings were correct. All of this while playing
back and forth with the PnP settings in the BIOS!
I never would have gotten it. If I hadn't seen
it ... I wouldn't believe a combination like that would
be possible.

Not only that...but I can go between Linux and
Windows now without it changing the sound
and locking me out of the cool sounds in both
OSs. Truly a wonder after all I had been through
with this. My husband is amazing!

Have fun...Linux is really a blastso cool!

Re: [newbie] Worthless email list

2000-06-11 Thread Ot Ratsaphong

Hi folks,

I've just joined the list and have been lurking for the last week just to
get a feel for the list.

I emphathise with Richard but I don't think the list is worthless. I'm still
searching for a list that I can relate to. I'm still hoping I can get some
help from this list. I'll do help others with what I know.

I've just upgraded form Mandrake 6.1 to Mandrake 7.0 and have been playing
around with it for the last week.

One thing I noticed that is missing is the Screen power management system.
Excuse me but I don't know the exect term for it. In KDE there was a desktop
setting that would put my monitor into power-saving standby mode. With MDK
7.0 this feature is no longer installed by default. I don't like using the
screensavers because essentially my monitor is still on. I would appreciate
it if someone can tell me which package I should install and how to get that
feature back again. Otherwise I'm considering going back to MDK 6.1 and just
upgrading the packages that I need.

If anyone is interested, I'm trying to see if I can make my PC completely
Windows free. I think with MDK 7.1 I might be there.

TIA

It is sad that such a good product has such a worthless mailing list.

I posted a serious install error a few days ago asking for help. I
got one response and it was only a smart remark about the error
message.

I had hoped that this list was serious about helping solve problems,
but I was obviously wrong.
