[newbie] dynamic ip server installation
Hi all, i installed succesfully M7.1, i selected server installation, like i did on my laptop a few months ago. There is a difference however: the laptop has a fixed ip, the workstation has a dynamic ip. Is it possible that some serverdaemons are not starting because of the dynamic ip? On my laptop i didn't need to do anything to get Apache up 'n running. On the workstation it won't start ("could not determine local hostname) thx for your suggestions. Pieter
[newbie] installation splash-screen
Hi, to boot in a kernel during installation from cd-rom, someone said here that i had to press F1 when the splash-screen appeared. Which splash-screen is meant? the only screens i see when i start the installation are the following: -scanning scsi etc. -select the media that contains the packages -initializing cdrom -select installationlanguage etc (all in the GUI-installation) now when should i press F1 to boot the kernel, without installation, so i can make a new kernel? thx Pieter

Hi Pieter, The splash screen is the initial screen you seen when booting from the cd. Where you can hit ENTER to install/upgrade or F1 for other options. this doesn't work (see below) -scanning scsi etc. -select the media that contains the packages -initializing cdrom -select installationlanguage etc (all in the GUI-installation) after the language selection there is the question if i want to install (automated/customized/expert) or upgrade... F1 gives me only the explanation about the possibilities, in a full screen instead of in the small frame on the bottom. I doubt that you can create a kernel without installation. The kernel generation depends on all the sources and also the gcc compiler being installed. they are installed. The problem is that i cannot boot the system (unable to mount root fs), i think it is because probably the kernel uses a scsi module to access the scsi devices, but therefor it needs to have the root fs mounted, but this is on a scsi dev.

Ah, that is the problem... Have you tried loading the kernel like this, from the lilo prompt: linux 3 root=/dev/sda? where ? is the partition where you have the root directory installed? Or is the problem that your kernel cannot access the scsi disks because it lacks SCSI support? (In which case I would not know what to do.) (I have not yet managed to get this command working from Grub) it is indeed the lack of SCSI support that hangs the system. (as far as i can see) during installation there was a ramdisk containing the necessary modules, but the mandrake 7.1 installation does not give the user the oppurtunity to make a bootdisk, (sorry for the voabulary, but _This_Sucks_Big_Time). If i could get a bootdisk for mandrake-linux on alpha i would be extremely happy ( because this problem is hanging several weeks now, and nobody seems to have a solution) Hmm. Perhaps you can create a dos boot diskette with scsi support for your disks and cdrom, and go for a text-install from there. Perhaps that gets you in the right direction. (THis is just a thought, not a proven way to go.) problem is that it is an alpha workstation, so dos-bootdisks won't help me a lot. The really big problem is that i don't have a working alpha to recompile the kernel... or to create a valid bootdisk. Good luck / groeten uit Nederland thx, evenzoveel groeten uit Leuven (Belgie) en beste wensen voor het komende millenium! ;-) Pieter
[newbie] mandrake-installation
Hi, my system has only scsi harddrives. When I boot from cdrom (ide) to perform the installation everything runs fine. However, in the instalationprocess (7.1 for Alpha) there is no opportunity to make a bootdisk. my problem: when i boot the system : kernel panic: unable to mount root fs. i guess this is because the installer has installed the scsi module for the kernel and so the kernel has no scsi support in it. This results in a booting kernel who is unable to mount the root (=scsi) partition, because the scsi module is on the unreadable scsi drive. giving root=/dev/sda1 doesn't work, that' s the reason for my guess. can anybody help? it is for an alpha station, so it is hard for me to compile a new kernel on an intel processor. thx Pieter
[newbie] installation 7.1 on scsi disks
Hi, my system has only two scsi disks. I installed M7.1 from CDROM. when after installation I tried to reboot, the kernel stops with a kernel panic: unable to mount root fs. somebody sugested it is maybe because i installed from (IDE)cdrom, and my root fs is on a scsi disk. During installation the scsi was recognized, resulting in using the scsi kernelmodules. Now at startup the modules are not loaded because therefor the rootfs must be mounted. Is this a reasonable explanation? If so, how can i make my system work?i.e. how can i compile my kernel so the scsi is in it, and not a module? (whitout being able to boot, i seems hard to me) the system is an alphastation, with digital alpha processor, 21164 chipset. thx Pieter

Dennis Myers wrote: Which version are you using? 7.1,7.2? If you go to drakeconfig and click on the boot it will give you a drop down with make boot floppy on it. Have fun. i can't boot my installation, therefor i'd like to make a bootdisk from the cdrom but i'm afraid those bootdisk images will start the installation procedure. is this correct? it's for 7.1, for alpha-processors. [newbie] installation on alphastation 500
Hi, i tried to install mdk 7.1 on an AlphaStation 500a. instalation went very smooth, but at the end when I rebooted the system to get working I'v got a kernel panic. I performed the autmatic installation, including aboot, i also left 2048 sectors free before starting the first ( / ) prtition sda1. the installation placed aboot and configured it (i suppose) because in the entry list of aboot there is something about mandrake kernel 2.2.15 etc. also stating is the option: root=/dev/sda1 now when booting from the srm console the kernel is loaded but stopped with the kernel panic VFS could not mount root fs. What went wrong? Is there a workaround? thx Pieter
[newbie] upgrading XFree86 from 3.3.6 to 4.01
Hi there, I'm trying to upgrade the XFree86 3.3.6 that came with my Mandrake 7.1 to the version XFree86 4.01. Using rpm rpm tells me (when upgrading the libs) that the libs currently are needed by version 3.3.6. Is there en alegant way to upgrade without removing first the 3.3.6 before installing the 4.01? thx in advance Pieter
