Re: [newbie] Modem works (logs on) BUT *no* net, mail, etc.

2000-07-21 Thread Rob Ogilvie

Do you have your DNS settings set properly? Try to connect to the internet and ping a
server via
it's IP (152.163.15.37 is a perfect example, one of AOL's up servers). If that
doesn't go
through, your internet connection isn't good, you aren't really connected to the
internet. If it
does go through, then try pinging a domain, such as americaonline.aol.com and see if
that works.
You should get similar results (assuming you end up on the same server I did). If it
doesn't go
through, but instead gives you an 'unknown host' error, you do not have your DNS
servers properly
configured. Get them from your ISP and put them in to Kppp under the DNS tab. Odds
are that is
your problem, I didn't see you mention DNS in your original post.

Good luck!

 Hi all,

I'm a self-confessed Linux newbie, and this is my first post to the
list; so TIA for any help. I'll try to stay in the parameters of the
List "rules" ... And, I'll apologize, upfront, for a long post
trying to add all the details...

Just installed Linux Mandrake 7.0 ... relatively few hitches. This is
on a PII 350 machine w/ a generic v90 modem, 128 MB memory, ATi video
 card, etc.

Everything works wonderfully ('cept the SoundBlaster Gold 64 ... but
I'll save that for a different post. My big deal is that I want it to
get online). I've been doing most all my work in the KDE env. and have
tried various things as the admin. (root) and other logins.

 MY BIG PROBLEM:

I can dial up but, *nothing* "works" online, i.e., Netscape starts fine,
with the local page on my HDD; but, if I click on anything, like the
link to the online Mandrake page, I get the following errors, in two
 windows:

  Netscape: Error 2
Netscape is unable to locate the server
   www.linux.mandrake.com.
Please check the server name and try again.

 AND

  Netscape: Error
Warning: the following hosts are unknown:
home.netscape.com
home6.netscape.com
internic.net

This means that some or all hosts will be unreachable.
Perhaps there is a problem with your name server?
long paragraph here about, if my site must use a
non-root name server and the $SOCKS_NS environment
variable ... sounds too hard to be the problem -- grin

I called my ISP, they can see that I'm validly on-line (logged in, etc),
but no external contact works! I tried mail [KMail v 1.0.28 (w/ all the
proper POP3 and SMTP settings)] and that errors out too. It can't find
my mailhost, even though the tech-help guy and I checked my POP3 and
SMTP settings (that was as far as he could go ... he wasn't familiar w/
 Linux).

Kppp [v 1.6.22, I think] seems to be configured fine. I am worried that
the modem didn't work AT ALL ["modem busy"] at first and I had to use
the system utilities [DrakConf and "Lothar" (v 0.5.3)] to find it. The
modem is at "/dev/ttyS1" instead of "/dev/modem" is that a problem?
Telling the dial-up program to look for the modem there works well ...
do I need to tell Netscape and KMail that the modem is elsewhere (not in
the "expected" ? "dev/modem" spot) too?

I tried a link from the Mandrake Linux page (from another computer) it
was somewhere in FAQ-land, but I've lost the link...

 The sub-head:
"Connection establishes, holds, but you can't get anywhere"
had the advice that I try running "/sbin/route -n" as root, while
offline, and said I shouldn't* see any entry starting with '0.0.0.0' ...
I do see such an entry (output, from the command).

The FAQ recommended I run "/sbin/route del default" and, even logged in
as root, the file wasn't found.

I looked in '/etc/sysconfig/network' and there were NO lines starting
 with
"GATEWAY or GATEWAYDEV" (something else the FAQ warned about).

I don't want to run a webserver, or even a LAN, with this computer right
now. All I want to do is gain some Linux experience and browse the
 web/edit docs in a non-MicroSoft machine.

I haven't given up, but would love some help!

 TIA, for any helpful input...

 --tim

 PS. I'm obviously not afraid to tinker and consider myself a DOS guru;
so any commands, etc. that find a parallel in the DOS world, would
 help.

Re: [newbie] Network quirk

2000-07-21 Thread Rob Ogilvie

If you are using DHCP, shut down both machines, start up one, let it completely boot,
then start
up the other one. You may also need to install IPX/SPX protocols on both to resolve
names to them
as far as browsing them goes. I have had similar problems with small Windows networks
from
booting them up at different times... like the computer on 192.168.0.1 is shut down
and then
192.168.0.2 is the lowest IP, and then the original machine starts up and doesn't know
what IP to
take. Try running WinIPCfg on them and see if they are taking similar enough IPs.

 Hi guys and gals.

Last night I started my Linux box, everything apparently normal, but one thing: the

bar. It was missing the section where open windows buttons go. I mean, if i

there was no way (as far as I know) to restore it again by clicking in the
corresponding button
on the panel, cause there were no buttons! Also was missing, in the same panel, the
little
square where I can choose the other desktops. I tried to reconfigure the panel, but
I could only
add some applets and stuff like launchers, "swallowed apps" (?), etc. I never found
the right
 way to restore my panel.

I also read the Gnome user manual, but found nothing about my problem.

Does anyone know how to restore my two missing items (open windows buttons and the
desktop
 chooser)?

 Thanks in advance

Re: [newbie] need replacment for kppp

2000-07-20 Thread Rob Ogilvie

There is also netcfg.. just create a ppp connection. That's what I prefer, Kppp
doesn't work
all the time Try to find a readme on it. You can set it to start when you boot,
or activate
it when you want to, or deactivate it when you want to.

Re: [newbie] Motorola Modem

2000-07-20 Thread Rob Ogilvie

I had an SM56 and let me tell you about it

It was the WORST MODEM EVER!!! First off, it is a Winmodem, and unless something has
changed in
the last year, Linux DOES NOT support Winmodems. The SM56 will not run stabilly on
any CPU I've
seen yet. You probably get frequent disconnects from your ISP and assume it's your
ISP's fault...
it's not. EVERYBODY I know who has that modem has said it's a piece of garbage. If
you want to
connect to the internet in Linux, get a controller-based modem (almost always ISA).
It's gonna
cost you around $50 for a good deal on one, though. I wouldn't even bother trying to
get the SM56
running under Linux, it is s heavily dependent on drivers and CPU power I can't
imagine it
would ever run in a respectable OS like Linux (last I looked there weren't even any
drivers for it
for Win2K... the 2nd best OS).

Good luck!

 Hi guys...
I am trying to make my modem work under linux. I have a Motorola SM56
modem, it´s a PCI one.The specs say it is designed for windows, however
I was told that if it shows as Communication controller on my /proc/pci
 I could make it work.
So, it does really shows as comm controller, however I am not getting to

make it work with the setserial commands.
Looking at /var/log file, I can see two serial ports, ttyS0 and ttyS1.
My modem is using COM4 under windows.
Do I have to use de makedev to make this com available for my modem ?
Other thing, at the /proc/pci looking in the comm. controller it does
not show the I/O port used, I can see that with the setserial -a
 /dev/ttyS3 though.
Is this correct ??? Because using the two setserial commands to set the
modem, did not work for me, I kept getting the message, modem busy.
If you guys have any ideias, please tell me.
 Thanks !!!

Re: [newbie] Internet sharing

2000-07-19 Thread Rob Ogilvie

Please elaborate a little bit more

Are the two NICs in the Linux box (Windows98 server, too?) set to 192.186.0.1 and .2?
Why is
this? Is one of them your DSL connection and the other for the LAN? Then you have a
client (98,
too?) with DHCP set generally taking the 192.186.0.2 (.3?) IP on your LAN?
Please try to
explain this in a little bit greater detail, explain where the internet is coming into
your LAN
and where... and then how your LAN is set up.

I have been told that IP Masq. requires static IPs on your LAN, so you can't use DHCP.
 I haven't
been able to get it to work becuase I also use 98SE's ICS on another computer on the
LAN, so this
one is at 192.168.0.2 and is set by DHCP

Try to explain how everything is set up in as much detail as possible...

Rob

 Hi Y'all,

I apologize in advance if this topic has been covered
repeatedly, but I just joined the list today.

I've looked at the mans and docs for internet sharing,
particularly ip masquerading, and I'm still quite confused
about how to set this up.

 Here's my situation:

 Currently, I use a Win98 server and a Win98 client on a
DSL connection, which is working fine using DHCP.
I have two ethernet cards (both recognized automatically
and correctly by hardDrake) and the client also has an
ethernet card. I've set eth0 to 192.186.0.1 and eth1 as
192.186.0.2. Eth0 is also set to DHCP.

I'm using two hard drives, with Win98 on one, Mandrake
on the other, and my Linux setup works just fine,
other than the internet sharing. I'm able to cruise the
'net just fine when using Linux, btw, using DHCP.

I would prefer the server use Mandrake 7.1. Perhaps I
don't have the needed sustained concentration or
intelligence, but I'm really flopping around like a fish out
 of water here.

I suspect my main problem are that there are too many
 possibilities: both correct and incorrect!

Besides this basic problem, I would like to know more
 about programming in Ocaml . . .

 Thanks!

[newbie] Tcl/Tk Upgrade?

2000-07-19 Thread Rob Ogilvie

Mandrake 7.0 comes with Tcl/Tk 8.0.5. I want to install Tik and have all it's
features, and that
requires Tcl/Tk 8.1 or higher. I downloaded an RPM and tried it. It dind't work. I
got errors
mentioning things like dependencies. I then un-installed version 8.0.5 and then
installed
8.4a1-1, only to find Tik wouldn't run at all (gave me a wish error or something).
Then netcfg
wouldn't even run, saying Python wasn't properly configured for Tk on my machine.
Well does
this mean I have to reinstall everything to get a newer version of Tcl/Tk? Is it even
possible to
install a newer version or am I stuck with 8.0.5? People have told me it should be
easy to
upgrade, but none have actually done it themselves and their instructions didn't work
for me.
Have any of you out there actually done it or is it ever going to work?

My computer:
AMD Athlon 550 on an FIC SD11 motherboard
64MB PC100 SDRAM
16.8 and 3.5 GB HDDs
Voodoo3 3000
SB PCI128 Sound Card
48X CD-ROM drive

Mandrake Linux 7.0, Windows 98, Windows 2000, FreeBSD 4.0, and BeOS 5 PE
