[newbie] Xine to play dvd's
I have a Tyan Motherboard 640 megs of ram 850 AMD GForce 4 Ti 4400 AGP Running Mandrake 9.2 I am basically looking for a good source for Xine and the plugins and stuff I need for playing DVD's. I have gone to over a dozen different sites and downloaded numerous different versions of Xine, CSS, dvdnav, etc and not quite sure which ones I'm suspose to use. If I could be pointed to a website or websites that has the correct files for me to get or confirm that I already have I think I could get it to work no problem. Plus, I like to use open source drivers. As it turns out, the 8500 does not seem to have any 3D Acceleration support in Mandrake 9.0 according to those who I have talked to, and won't for some time. The ATI supplied drivers are also incompatible with 9.0. As I just got my RMA approved, I need to find a substitute. 1) What other options do I have? Should I go with another ATI, or something else? I hear Nvidia's are good. 2) Who makes a good Nvidia card? 3) Should I go with a Geforce3 or a Geforce4? I have a Hercules Geforce3 at home, and I am not happy with it. I hear that people are very happy with Geforce3's from other manufacturers. - Paul Rodriguez Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

I have 9.0 installed and my GForce 4 is using the generic Nvidia driver right now. All I found at the nvidia site was for 8.2. I'm probably guessing right, but I'm not able to use those drivers. Correct? I've downloaded them but haven't done anything yet until I get a yes or a no on this. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank You. Mine worked after first erasing the old GLX files and afterwards installing the new nvidia GLX rpm . Also don't forget to change some setting in your XF86Config-4 (see nvidia docs). hello, tried to install some new nvid drivers for man 8.2, went to nvidia, matched the kernel and glx (3XXX) versions. the kernel installed fine, but the glx didn't want to. used the '-e' option outlined in the nvid read me and it installed but now X won't start at boot up! since i'm no expert on the console, i'm in trouble deep. any way to get myself out of this mess that isn't too complicated? any help would be appreciated. thanks Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? It works in all of the other applications I believe. Any help will be appreciated. Can't answer this, but I can add a bit that might spark inspiration in someone more knowledgeable. My printer is a DJ 990, so should be identical to yours (940 is, I believe somewhat slower and without the duplexer, but otherwise identical). I have printing from a browser, but no control. Printing from every browser I have tried does not allow me access to any of my setup printers. It specifies PostScript/Default, shows a dropdown box, but that has no other entries in. This seems to be the setting for the default printer, without any possibility of changing any properties/settings. Hope someone can use this to come up with an answer for you Anne Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com Dear Anne, Thank you for this added info. Re: [newbie] Virtual desktops in Linux-Mandrake and XP
I appreciate everybodies help it's just some of the emails I get I am clueless to. Talking about codes, mounts, etc etc etc. I'm lost. I ask a question and I get a breakdown of the system and how to manipulate the code. Not that I don't appreciate it, but I'm confused even worse. I'm not a programmer, I'm a mechanic with no intentiions of becoming a programmer or network administrator. I just like using the computer alot. Playing games, surfing the net and chatting. I'm just sick of windows fubaring every 20 minutes or my downloads are lost because I got disconnected because windows used up all my ram. And I think thats your problem wasn't meant as a slam or anything. It was just in general as in that's my opinion of the problem. Example: I think you have a problem with your lifters slapping the top of your pistons. It's not you it's the car. Don't take it personal wasn't directed at you. But anyways I am pleased with Mandrake, it just seems that most of the newbies are wicked smart with linux, unlike me. Metamorphysical a.k.a. Personally, I wish I could get them in all into one box and just shift between all three. I have Mandrake newbie since the beginning of March. I am learning and will be learning this and many other things until the day I die or go into a coma. Its only hard until you learn and someone takes the time to help. This list is very helpful, but like anywhere else there are those with the patience while others with the best intentions don't quite have that understanding patience with you.
