[newbie] Xine to play dvd's

2004-03-08 Thread Robert Beach
I have a Tyan Motherboard
640 megs of ram
850 AMD
GForce 4 Ti 4400 AGP
Running Mandrake 9.2

I am basically looking for a good source for Xine and the plugins and stuff
I need for playing DVD's. I have gone to over a dozen different sites and
downloaded numerous different versions of Xine, CSS, dvdnav, etc and not
quite sure which ones I'm suspose to use. If I could be pointed to a
website or websites that has the correct files for me to get or confirm that
I already have I think I could get it to work no problem.
Please and Thankyou
Robert Beach

[newbie] dvd plugin for xine

2004-03-06 Thread Robert Beach
I have a 850 AMD cpu

Tyan Motherboard

I have been surfing for the plugins for xine so I can play dvds in Mandrake
9.2
I am still new at this and all the different rpms and tars I find are
confusing. I'm not sure which one to use or how many to use. If I could
just have a good source to download from that works well I could probably
figure out how to install it.
Please help

As I just got my RMA approved, I need to find a substitute.

  1) What other options do I have? Should I go with another ATI, or

  2) Who makes a good Nvidia card?

  3) Should I go with a Geforce3 or a Geforce4?

I have a Hercules Geforce3 at home, and I am not happy with it. I hear

Mine worked after first erasing the old GLX files and afterwards installing
the new nvidia GLX rpm .
Also don't forget to change some setting in your XF86Config-4 (see nvidia

  hello,

tried to install some new nvid drivers for man 8.2, went to nvidia,

this mess that isn't too complicated? any help would be appreciated.

 Dear All,

Printing works fine on my LM8.2 with my HP 940c deskjet printer (USB)
except when I try to print from the net, email, or xpdf. It works in all
of the other applications I believe. Any help will be appreciated.

Can't answer this, but I can add a bit that might spark inspiration in
someone more knowledgeable. My printer is a DJ 990, so should be
identical
to yours (940 is, I believe somewhat slower and without the duplexer, but
otherwise identical). I have printing from a browser, but no control.

Printing from every browser I have tried does not allow me access to any
of
my setup printers. It specifies PostScript/Default, shows a dropdown
box,
but that has no other entries in. This seems to be the setting for the
default printer, without any possibility of changing any
properties/settings.

Hope someone can use this to come up with an answer for you

 Dear Anne,

Thank you for this added info. Mine does the same thing from browsers,
but does not print. I am sure there has to be a simple solution. Thanks.

[newbie] Installing new rpms from disks

2001-10-30 Thread Robert Beach

I'm trying to install more programs from disk. I go through the list it has
in the software manager then I select install.
It asks for disk three I put in disk 3 it goes a couple of seconds then spits
it back out. A message pops up saying: Please inster the medium named disc
3 Supplementary Applications CD (x86) (cdrom3) on device [/dev/cdrom]

Now I have two cdroms, and I had troubles with the one that pops out in
windows for some reason. I was wondering if there is a way to change the
cdrom it uses?

I'm lost please help

Re: [newbie] Virtual desktops in Linux-Mandrake and XP

2001-10-30 Thread Robert Beach

I appreciate everybodies help it's just some of the emails I get I am
clueless to. Talking about codes, mounts, etc etc etc. I'm lost. I ask a
question and I get a breakdown of the system and how to manipulate the code.
Not that I don't appreciate it, but I'm confused even worse.

I'm not a programmer, I'm a mechanic with no intentiions of becoming a
programmer or network administrator. I just like using the computer alot.
Playing games, surfing the net and chatting. I'm just sick of windows
fubaring every 20 minutes or my downloads are lost because I got disconnected
because windows used up all my ram.

And I think thats your problem wasn't meant as a slam or anything. It was
just in general as in that's my opinion of the problem. Example: I think
you have a problem with your lifters slapping the top of your pistons. It's
not you it's the car. Don't take it personal wasn't directed at you.
But anyways I am pleased with Mandrake, it just seems that most of the
newbies are wicked smart with linux, unlike me.

Personally, many here and everywhere would love to see Microsoft disappear
from the face of the earth. Personally, I am currently running
 Linux-Mandrake 8.0, MacOS X, and WindowsXP. I love them all. Personally, I
wish I could get them in all into one box and just shift between all three.
I have Mandrake newbie since the beginning of March. I am learning and will
be learning this and many other things until the day I die or go into a
coma. Its only hard until you learn and someone takes the time to help.
This list is very helpful, but like anywhere else there are those with the
patience while others with the best intentions don't quite have that
 understanding patience with you.

Anyone can learn anything if they are committederr dedicated not

[newbie] Flash Player

2001-10-29 Thread Robert Beach

I went to a site with Konqueror on 8.1 and it said I needed to download
Macromedia Flash Player. The only directions it had was to copy it to the
Netscape Plugin Directory, Nothing for Konqueror. Does this mean Konqueror
isn't able to use Flash?

This is probably a stupid question for some of you on this list,(and I am
new with linux), but what advantages do I get with updating the kernel from
the 2.2.17 to 2.4.0?

I would imagination it is a plus for the software, but I would just like to
know.

I'm not sure what you meant by natively or wine but that is quite a list. I
thought for sure the software for ultima online said it would work on
Mandrake. That's like my favorite game. You don't have to tell me any of
your secrets, but was it hard to get baldur's gate diablo2 and half life to
work, or did it take long to make them work.
