RE: [newbie] sound in mdk 10
Hi, I had the same sort of problem with my Vaio... Let me guess - XMMS won't play, KDE crashes on startup, Mplayer is flakey? Check your sound driver in DrakConf (go to Hardware and configure the sound driver from there). I noticed that the sound driver that Mandrake was using was different to the one I had used to MDK9.0... I picked the original one and rebooted. Everything works perfectly now. (I also screwed about with sound other things, but it's likely was I barking up the wrong tree). [newbie] Digital Camera and Mandrake 10
Hi All, I've got a small problem with my digital camera and Mandrake 10. Before, with MDK9.0, I used to plug it into the USB port and mount it on /dev/sda1 (set as vfat) and that would work fine. When I plugged the camera into MDK10 my USB mouse stopped working and I am unable to mount the camera. Trying to create sda1, sda2, etc with mknod hasn't helped either. I've read that the sda# devices aren't really supposed to be used anymore and /dev/usb/... Should be used instead. Is this correct? The other problem is that I've also tried to get the usb-storage and usb-uchi loaded by adding them to /etc/modules but it doesn't seem to have make any effect when booting. If I attempt to mount the camera currently my system will freeze. Any advice? [newbie] Fixed My Sound (MDK 10)
Hi All, I have just fixed my sound so I thought I'd share exactly what I did incase anyone else is still struggling. I'm running Mandrake 10 CE on a Vaio Laptop. The install went perfectly but KDE crashed instantly and continued to do so until I switched off the sound using Kcontrol via IceWM. Neither XMMS nor Mplayer would play nicely with the sound, so I decided to try doing a lot of stuff to sort it out (since I've heard that KDE 3.2 uses a different sound method and it buggers with other things). Basically I did the following (it is quite possible that the last step is actually the only thing that made the difference!), 1) I removed arts 1.2 (forced) 2) I removed xmms 1.2.9 (forced) 3) I installed arts 1.1.3 (forced) 4) I installed xmms 1.1.3 (forced) After a reboot I still had no joy, so I finally went into Mandrake control's hardware config tool and had a look at the sound driver, It was set to snd-via82xx, which didn't look right... So I changed to driver to the alternative via82xx driver, rebooted and now everything works. Sorry if that sounds really wooly but I'm posting this from work and can't get to my laptop to see what I used. Hope this helps some people... Now I can get on with coding Blob Wars : Metal Blob Solid! :) Stevie :) -- This message is intended only for the personal and confidential use of the designated recipient(s) named above. [newbie] MDk10CE, KDE 3.2 and no sound
(sorry if this comes out a bit long, but I'd like to make sure that I've explained everything). On the weekend I installed Mandrake 10 (install, not update). Install went fine. I then booted into KDE 3.2. It hung leaving the Mandrake wallpaper in the background. I tried again, this time I got a warning about Knotify not starting and asking me if I wanted to disable it. I did and it still hung. I then went into IceWM, fired up Kcontrol and turned off the sound in KDE (can't remember how I came to this conclusion). So now KDE loads. That's good. The trouble is that there are a number of apps that now will not support sound. I have tried setting KDE to use OSS and Threaded OSS and, although it will still load fine, I still can't get sound from the apps I want to use. In particular I'm having problems with, 1) XMMS - This one is strange. With ALSA it will not play. With OSS it will continually loop the first 1 second or so of the song until I hit stop. 2) Mplayer - Will play most movie files fine, but if you exit half way through the sound will loop around for around 5 seconds before stopping. 3) SDL game (not tried others) - There is no sound whatsoever. I tried recompiling the projects I'm working on and they simply can't get access to the sound. I know my hardware is compatible (Sony VIAO laptop) as I have been using MDK9 on it for over a year. Anyone got any suggestions, fixes, etc? It's very frustrating have all the benefits of the new KDE and general speed of everything but with such a let down in the sound department. Well, hey... If I can get KDE 3.2 working with sound on Mandrake 9.2 then I will do that instead... Could anyone advise me? I did do an update immediately... But it was a selective update. I didn't do things like Apache. [newbie] Joypad only available to root in MDK9.0
Hullo, I've got myself a PSX-USB converter and it seems fine under Mandrake. I just plug it in and it is detected and works okay. Just one small problem is that the joypad is only available to root. If I run a prog as a normal user it says that it doesn't see any joypads. The same prog when run as root sees the joypad and is able to use it. What do I need to do to get it to be usable by a normal user? Cheers, Stevie :) -- This message is intended only for the personal and confidential use of the designated recipient(s) named above. Hi All, Just a quick one here... I've got a USB mouse plugged into a Viao laptop and it works fine... RE: [newbie] 10.0 News and Issues
Just read the bit in the link about removing KDE altogether in order to upgrade to 3.2... Is there another way? I would rather not uninstall KDE and then do the whole urpmi thing for it to fail... [newbie] Problem upgrading from 9.0 to 9.2
Hi All, I tried the update over the weekend and after about 3 hours or so of getting packages I thought it was done, but when it went to do the final install it stopped and told me that Apache 1.3 clashed with Apache 2, both of which urpmi download itself. I also got an error message about kdepim being required... The steps I took where (as root), * init 1 * urpmi urpmi * urpmi --auto-select --no-verify (or whatever it was) Annoyingly all the packages that had been downloaded to /var/cache/urpmi/rpms were removed later on so now I have to start the process all over again! :( Should I remove Apache prior to the install and maybe even tell it not to update KDE? Anyone got any suggestions on this one? Cheers all, Stevie :) -- This message is intended only for the personal and confidential use of the designated recipient(s) named above. [newbie] Need help upgrading from Mandrake 9.0
Hi All, I recently got broadband installed and I wanted to update my Mandrake 9.0 installation to the very latest of... well... pretty much everything - Including KDE, Open Office, etc. My problem is that I don't fully understand the use of urpmi yet. I did the following, Set up some mirrors and hdlist locations Logged out of KDE (I understand that you can't / shouldn't update KDE within KDE) Did ctrl-alt-f1 from the login prompt for a terminal su to root Ran init 1 Did urpmi --auto-select and left it to it (after confirming to get the packages) Problem is it didn't actually DO anything to my sytem. I think what I told it to do was download all the packages and nothing else. I therefore have two requests, 1) Can someone please provide me with mirrors I may need to update properly from 9.0 to 9.2. 2) Give me correct urpmi command.
