RE: [newbie] Test of Wine with Win98 and WinMe

2000-11-26 Thread eschbach

Because as you have heard Windows ME isn't dos - based anymore. Yes some of the dos
functions exist but basically Windows ME acts on its own. I have windows ME and its
networking and other features are much much better. Even with the extensive tweaking
of the win 98 SE machine. I can get no where's near the speed of downloading that WIN
ME is getting.

Sorry about cross-posting, but note: anyone who was thinking of upgrading
 to Windows Me.

I tested Wine build 2909.1mdk.i586.rpm on a computer with win98
 installed,
and my computer with Windows Me installed.

Results: Wine worked a lot better with Windows 98. I got some programs
running and almost got MSWord running without fooling with the wine.conf
file. All of the simple Windows programs worked fine.

Tested with Windows Me, Wine doesn't run anything. Everything crashes, even
the program sol.exe that the Wine people tell you to use as a test fiel,
even with extensive tweaking of the windows.conf file.

I also tested the latest build wine-cvs-stripped 112500-1.i386.rpm from
Dataparty on both computers. result: Got lots of programs running on the
Windows 98 machine including microsoft excel! On the Windows Me machine, I
was able to run solitare without crashing (sol.exe) but nothing else would
 run.

i have the above card in my box, under lm7 and 7.1 it worked fine but now
i've installed 7.2 i cannot get get the card to initialise, i have not
changed the cards internal settings (full duplex non pnp) i have entered the
io and irq in the linuxconfnetworkingnetwork devices section but when i run
ifup eth0 or when the machine boots the error message 'delaying eth0
initialisation' comes up, i'm sure the card is fine and i have just missed
out a simple step, but lms 7 and 7.1 were so simple hardware wise that i'm
not aware of what else i should be looking at, what are the services needed
to get the card working (as opposed to actual network service like nfs etc.)

RE: [newbie] 7.2 installs and stuff

2000-11-24 Thread eschbach

4x lmfao and you wonder why it took so long takes about 22 mins on my machine for full
install

I've installed 7.2 on two different boxes, now (developmental), and both
installs took 3 HOURS! These boxes are probably minimum, P200mmx with 64M of
ram and scsi 9 gig drives with 50x ATAPI cdroms. Three hours seems out of
line for an install on a clean, formatted HD--at least to me. The longest
7.1 took was 70 minutes, or so--I was using scsi 4X cd's with those, though.
Would a scsi CD make that much difference?

So far, kde2 is definitely prettier than its predecessors, and a bit slower
to load. Apps are somewhat slower to load too (ala Win98)--I guess that's
the payment for the eye candy. Some stuff is not totally stable, imo. So
far my crashes have only happened when I CLOSED an app, never while running
one or while loading one. I get a consistent crash when I close the
background manager if I choose a background from a source other than kde's
default sourcefile, and I get the "app has crashed" window when I close any
Gnome game that I'm running in kde. Minor annoyances, but I don't think I'll
do any more 7.2 installs until the bugfixes come in the next month or so.

CUPS was kind of a headache for me, but I've got it figured out now. In
fact, I think I like it, now I've got the StarOffice printing sorted out.
Like anything new it requires some getting used to.

My one real complaint is the Konquerer network ran really slow copying from
Windows machines to the 7.2 machines. I don't have a clue why, it was fine
going from Linux box to Linux box. I installed the LinNeighborhood rpm and
now both Linux and Windows files copy fast. Anyone know why this happened to
me? Has it happened to anyone else, and if so, how did you fix it?

RE: [newbie] Problem with Telnet

2000-11-22 Thread eschbach

Well, why dont you tell them how to access this information. That is why this is the
newbie linux help. I won't tell them because you are the one that brought up the
issue. IF you want them to educate themselves you must first help them by at least
educating them to find this information. Yes, one is manual, but if you are an expert
you will tell them other ways of finding this information. Such as trying to lock the
screen as root... You can see which process isnt running *the name of it* and in the
terminal type the name of the process or program that isnt working that go and look
for information on that problem. Such as xserver says if you look in the help area
that you cant lock the screen as root but goes about telling you how to manually set
this, so you can lock the screen as root.

You guys don't do a lot of reading do you? There is a TON of HOWTO's and
documentation spread all over your HDD's that Linux has placed there for
the sole purpose of educating folks in the proper usage and operation of
the Linux operating system and it's related application such as telnet and
other's that are considered system critical apps. I would strongly
recommend that you begin to seriously devour this documentation so that
you don't find yourself in a position where you unknowingly compromise the
security of your systems to the point that you can no longer control who
get's in and what little "gifts" they leave behind. You may be awakened
some morning by men wearing cheap suits and badly made dark glasses
wanting total access to your hard drive(s). It isn't hard to turn some
poor unsuspecting users system into a relay station for all kinds of crap
data without the users knowledge if they've left the security doors
 hanging WIDE open.

Ok I have installed Mandrake-Linux with no problems on my system, 5 times now. I am
installing the lnx4win version. In windoz I got the DHCP, Default Gateway, my IP, my
subnetmast, which is 255.255.252.0, notice the 252 there?, and my DNS. I have used
the ifconfig -a function and my card is being reconized. BTW I have Road Runner cable
connection I have tried most every variant I can to get the internet connection up.
I am a true newb to Linux but frow what i understand the DHCP should configure my
system for me. I have before set up a NetMax server but when I did that it used a
static ip. Is there a function of sometype that i can run to set up my connection? Im
lost here.

[newbie] SDSL CONNECTION

2000-11-18 Thread eschbach

Anyone have any experience with configuring net connections on linux-mandrake?
I have a D-Link DFE-530 TX pci nic card that is a 10/100 card i also have a usb 3com
10 nic that doesnt work in linux. I have the d-link configured in linux. I am using
gnome as my main desktop. I have everything for the net configured but.. I enable
dhcp and it looks for it on the installation disks and then quits. Can I download DHCP
from the net *the packages* so I can configure them in linux? Of course, one of the
main reasons to have linux is to have access to the web with it. It's bugging the hell
out of me. I have linux mandrake 7.2 . and linux-conf. I can use for configuring.
Anyone that helps me out would get a big thanks. Also, I have my nic on eth 0 in linux
and all I configured is the domain name which is something.com (I have that
configured right) and I selected E0 and DHCP and no my isp doesnt use pppoe. But I
dont and on my sdsl modem the ethernet light is on so I know its ge!
tting a connection its just linux that can't "read" that connection. I really need to
get DHCP configured

Yes I am dual booting with windows. I have 3 partitions. WELL four. One for my mp3's.
One for windows. One for the linux swap file and one for the linux native file.
