 Heya..

Yeah.. I've tried DrakConnect and went through the wizard, but I'm not sure
what fields to set how. I have security at standard, as well. I've played
around with the settings a bit, but I could only get the ethernet card to go
up (I think only if I put in the IP statically), but not Internet. I could
 only ping myself.. nobody else.

I know something's funky cuz of how Comcast does stuff with DHCP.. not
giving us computer names and all anymore.. but I'm not sure how to make the
 internet work.

 Thanks again for any assistance.

you should be able to just connect via DHCP.. do you have all 3 disks
when u did the install? during bootup does it say starting eth0.. even
tho it can start it but not work... what does it say when u type
ifconfig eth0 as root? open mandrake control center go to network then
click launch the wizard and make sure there is a check in autodetection
and let it do its thing.. i never had problems with comcast but they did
switch to dynamic ip so u dont have to type anything in

disable cd 1 in the media manager and have urpmi find it
elsewhere.. you can check to see if its installed by going to
remove packages and then locate the rpm if its listed then its
installed.. i say its not if it says unable to install package.

You're quite right, it's not. The cds look perfectly OK, and I'm very
careful with them, but I occasionally get one that doesn't want to
install. I just rpmfind for the package I need, download it to a tmp
directory, then install from there. No problem - only it's too late
 to start that tonight.

ANd yes it only does it in Linux and not XP. I am using the generic

mouse with a wheel which it is. When I test it it is all good. It is
just sometimes when I am opening apps in Linux under GNOME or KDE it
will just lock up. Then I have to use the shortcut keys to exit and
reboot. It is a BTC optical usb mouse. I do not know the exact model
number. I have had this mouse for a while. OH BTW while I am at it, my
soundcard does not produce any sounds in Linux. Mandrake recognizes it
as the correct card and all with the right dirvers but just does not
work. It does not work on any sound files,mp3's,cda's etc...It is a
Soundblaster Audigy MP3+. I have also checked the Kmix setup and it is
all on and turned up. I do not know what else to try.

you should never have to reboot linux... if it freezes ctrl alt sysrq
and k should kill x.. if ctrl alt bkspce doesnt work first.. go in the
mandrake control center and go to boot and check lilo and force no APIC
to help with the freezing

I don't mean the permissions, but the umask settings. This way, any
new files createdin that directory will be created with a different
umask than the default. But i don;t think it is possible...

 thanks,

if im not mistaken umask is basically the same umask is the permissions
a file has for exec ftp is umask=022 i think. but anyways umask and
permissions is the same. you like umask 777 is rwxrwxrwx. but if you
wanna change your default file permissions or umask the edit your
