Re: [newbie] DSL connection (SBC)

I read some articles, and see that my ethernet modem should work under Linux. But what information do I need to set up my DSL connection under Linux? How can I know how to connect to SBC? Thank you Julien Its actually much easier to set up in Linux than windows. In the Mandrake Control Center, go to Network Internet, then Drak Connect and click the Wizard. Pick ADSL connection, click use pppoe, then fill in the following: Provider name sbcglobal.net Account Login: [EMAIL PROTECTED] account password: [your secret word] THEN do you want to start the connection at boot? more than likely YES. then you should be on your merry way. Re: [newbie] two Mandrakes on two harddrives

I am trying to do it so that I can beta test and yet run the regular system when I am not running tests. Any hints or manual suggestions are appreciated, I have not found anything to help. I have a small 8GB drive with lilo installed, It has win98 and mandrake. I installed on this drive because my second drive is a raid 0 array. When I got the kernel compiled with the raid drivers I then copied the system to the raid array and added a section in lilo for it. On the array is win98, win2k, and mandrake each with an entry in LILO. THese are the ones I use. If the array gets hosed I can boot win98 or mandrake off the small drive and fix the problem i.e. re-compile the kernel or whatever. The main reason I do this is because I never could get lilo on the raid array, the 2 times I tried broke the array and lost the partitions. Or when I'd upgrade the kernel the raid driver had to be re-compiled. Jack Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

[newbie] Mandrake 7.1 DHCP problem, pleeeease help!
ok, i just installed mandrake 7.1 and have chosen to use DHCP.I have tried it both manually and via the netconf gui. The system DOES detect my NIC which is a 3com etherIII 3c509...I chose to use DHCP, and dhcpd is run, i see the link light light up on my switch as it polls my sonicwall pool of addresses (Sonicwall is a vpn/firewall/router which sits behind my cable modem and distributes my internal DHCP and acts a the gateway to the net) but mandrake always sits there for about 45 seconds then FAILS!!! uhhg... same during boot...i've read several references to changing ifup scripts and/or ifcfg-eth0config files, but none of those options worked... now, please!!, can anyone help me troubleshoot this issue?!?!? and i mean step-by-step.. because im a newbie from hell... thanks.-stuck dude.

Can't update anything with Mandrake Update. I've actually had this problem. Have you tried rebuilding your rpm database? That's what fixed it for me. The reason mine froze up was because I terminated it abnormally during a prior installation and screwed up everything. On Monday 29 January 2001 01:25 am, you wrote: I have had no end of trouble with MandrakeUpdate freezing up everything. I sent a note to Mandrake support, and they replied I should install 'MandrakeUpdate-7.2-19mdk.i586.rpm' which I tried to do. It requires 'librpmio.so.0' which I found in 'rpm-4.0-4.i386.rpm'. That, however requires 'libc.so.6(glib-2.2' which is not yet available on any Mandrake update servers. It IS available from Red Hat and I'm wondering if I should install that, or will it just require an endless list of dependancies. Meanwhile, I'm stuck and can't update anything. MandrakeUpdate locks me up solid EVERY time I attemt to inatall anything and I have no option but to pull the big switch. Many thanks to anyone who may be able to shed some light on this. [newbie] Installing a module at startup
I've just compiled the ov511 module for my webcam. Now, in order to start the webcam I have to do a modprobe manually each time I reboot (which is often because the computer is in my room and if I leave it on at night, the fans interfere with my sleeping). I was looking around modules.conf man pages and modprobe man pages to see how to install a module at boot time. This way, I can also start up apache at boot up and have the webcam running on my webpage the instant I boot up, if I wished to. Could someone help me out here? What would be the proper way to get the ov511.o module to be modprobed at start-up?
Re: [newbie] partitions for Mandrake 7.2
On Monday 08 January 2001 02:40 am, you wrote: This is my very first post. hope it doesn't violate any of your rules. When I try and install my 7.2 powerpack deluxe distro I get to the stage of repartitioning my hard disk. The software gives you a choice of three options. The manual says that if you choose the middle option it will automatically repartition your hard disk for Linux use (I don't want to get rid of windows). When I select the middle option (use free space on the windows partition) it gives me this error message: Partitioning failed: The FAT resizer is unable to handle your partition, the following error occured: Can't locate object method "new" via package "resize_fat::main" at /usr/bin/perl-install/install-interactive.pm line 108, line 6. Whats up? If the installation software can't repartition my hard drive then I'll have to do it myself. How many partitions do I need to make with diskdrake and what do I need to set the mounting points as? Now, I'm a newbie myself, but I somewhat grasp how this partitioning thing works. At a minimum, you only need one partition mounted as /. You can create as many as you want and mount them as any other folder. Also, I've never used any partitioning software in Linux so you have to make sure it resizes the other partition(s) on that disk in order to create your partition and not just deletes it since this may make your other OSes or programs in the OSes not work correctly.
Re: [newbie] Configure X problems
you could try changing your video card to the matrox g200 since from what i've been told most matrox cards are universal except for a few things like if your card has a tv tuner on it e.t.c as i'm running x with the g200 and had no probs so try telling x you ahve a g200 in the cardn selection screen might work On Sun, 26 Mar 2000, you wrote: I'm very new to the Linux world, and as such, I have decided to try installing Mandrake Linux 7.0 on one of my machines. The install runs fine up to the point of Configure X. Anyway, I'm not sure if this is a function of it failing to detect my hardware or the install not correctly configuring/copying the 'fixed' font. Thanks in advance.
