Hi
Visit linux.3dfx.com and select the drivers appropriate
for your 3dfx videocard. You will need to compile the
source RPMS. There is enough information on the site to
enable a novice (if that is what you are) to complete all
steps. After the drivers are installed and tested in both
2D and 3D modes, you can use a Mandrake 7.02 binary
RPM which allows users other than 'root' to use the
drivers when installed.

Anybody have any ideas on this one? I just built a new

Stealth III video
card. I installed Mandrake 7.02, got the installer to
recognize all the

question---why is
the speed being recognized as 696.2 bogomips? Seems
awfully slow to me.

I can't get this card to work in MD 7.0. According to the
"howto's" this
card is supposed to be supported. Using Lothar the card
is identified as
Ensoniq ES1371. All of the settings use -1 and don't
offer any other
settings. Testing the card in Lothar locks up the
computer. Trying to use

other cards settings just says that the device or
resource is busy. During

boot I can see where it loads the sound module. What do I
need to do? Any
 help appreciated.

"Running Linux" by Matt Walsh, et. al. is an excellent reference. If you're

"Linux in a Nutshell" explains virtually all linux commands you'll need from a

[newbie] re:Installaion problems 9GB disk

2000-02-18 Thread rjpeake

Hello
You will need to give up some of your disk space which is
now reserved for windows to the Linux operating system.
I suggest that you use Partition Magic 4.01 or 5.0 (newer
and more expensive than 4.01) to do this job.
You will need to defragment your files on the windows
partition (the area of the disk reserved for the windows
operating system) before you use Partition Magic.
If you have a choice of Linux, I would suggest Mandrake
6.1 or perhaps the latest version of Mandrake, 7.0-2.
If you are worried about using a powerful program like
Partition Magic to re-partition your disk then do not do
it. Either ask a friend who knows how to
do this job properly or forget about installing Linux, any
version of Linux, on the same hard disk as windows.
I am writing this from past unpleasant experience, so
please be warned.
Ron

Re: [newbie] IDE harddrive detection in 7.0 fails

2000-02-03 Thread rjpeake

Hi
(1)Linux often has problems with partition sizes greater
than 8 gigabytes. It is also fussy about where the LILO is
placed (the 1024 cylinders thing).
(2) Mandrake Software has admitted that DiskDrake does not
yet work as it should.

To solve a similar problem I used Partition Magic 4.01,
which allowed me to graphically, non-destructively, shrink
Windows partitions and create Linux native partitions in the
resulting free space. This is a commercial product and
there may be free alternatives available but I have no
personal experience of them.
Regards,
Ron

Hello
I had the same problem which was caused by a faulty installation.
Watch closely for error messages during the boot process indicating problems
mounting drives.
My solution to was to re-partition the hard disk and start over.
