[newbie] Printer sharing question
I have a Windows98 box connected to a LM7.2 Box over a crossover Cat5. I connect to the internet from the Linux Box. I can happily surf using both the machines. Unfortunately I bought a Lexmark Z22, which works only with Windows. How do I set up the printer on the Windows box, so that I can print stuff from the Linux box. Thanks Surya
[newbie] Installed ML7.2, cannot find CD-RW and Floppy
Hi: I installed ML7.2 on a PIII box. The opted to install as a developer machine. Everything went of smoothly. However when I try to access a CD either by clicking on the CD-ROM icon on the KDE desktop or by doing a "ls /mnt/cdrom" it says that there is an I/O error. I looked at the mtab file and it had the following line: /mnt/cdrom /mnt/cdrom supermount rw,fs=iso9660 dev=/dev/cdrom 0 0 I tried removing that line, hoping to mount the cdrom manually later. However when I rebooted the machine, the line was back in the /etc/mtab file. Like the CD-RW drive (that is what I have), I am unable to access the floppy drive as well. Can some one please help me fix this problem Thanks in advance. Surya
[newbie] Cable Modem Woes
Hi: I am trying to connect my box running linux-mandrake 7.2 with @Home. I am able to configure the eth0 interface and it does show up when I do a ifconfig and a netstat -r. I used netconf to assign the host name, DNS server names etc. While I am able to ping the machine with the IP address i give to the eth0 interface, I cannot reach anything outside the box. This is a short summary of what I did: # insmod rtl8139 # ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.10 netmask 255.255.255.0 up # route add default eth0 after that i went into netconf and gave it the host name, DNS server address etc. I check all the related .conf files. If i ping 192.168.1.10 it goes through. But if try to ping anything else it just fails. I tried using dhclient to see if it is able to reach @Home's DHCP server but to no avail. Another thing that I noticed is that every time I reboot, the eth0 interface fails to come up and I have to manually bring up that interface. This is my setup, I have a a nic connected to a hub, connected to a cable modem. I have two other windows boxes connected to the hub, which I turned off as I first wanted to get the linux box working. The windows boxes work fine. I think I am missing some key procedure in this. Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong? Thanks in advance. Surya
[newbie] Memory Question
I have ML7.2 installed on my machine. I have about 128MB of RAM. After I log in if I see the mem occupancy using either Hard Drake or xsysinfo or one of the other X-utils, I see that only about 4-12 Megs appear to be free. Consequently the machine is horribly slow. Agreed that I am doing this on an old Cyrix 6X86 200MHz processor. But I still feel that 128 Megs ought to make the machine atleast launch an X-term quickly. Any idea why the machine is this slow? Thanks in advance Surya
Re: [newbie] How to install ppp ???
Try kppp. I like the part that Queries the modem. If you are missing the pppd daemon, then use draknet and it will guide you with the installation. How can i install ppp Please an easy way... Thank...
[newbie] User Add
Can someone explain what is going on here... After installing ML7.2, I created a user, the uid alloted was 501. After that I added some more users with uid's 502, 503 etc. The I deleted the user whose uid was 501. When i tried to add the same login name at a later time, it said that the login name looked like a group name and refused to let me add that. However after quitting drakuser after deleting that user (501), i restarted drakuser and it allowed me to add a user with the same login name, however the uid assigned to that guy was 507. But the I am unable to login as this guy. I cannot understand why it won't let me log on as this guy, even tho it shows up in the login GUI. My questions are: (1) Since UIDs are assigned in increasing order, will I ever have access to UID 501 again? Or for that matter old UIDs that no longer have a user?? (2) Why am I unable to access the an account that seems to exist? Thanks in advance... Surya
Re: [newbie] demon PPPD
I had the same problem. In my case when I installed mandrake, i chose to skip configuring internet connection. Later when I used draknet to setup my internet connection, it installed the pppd from disk1 of the distro (if you bot the distro like me). After that I was able to connect, well this mail is proof that I was able to. Hope this helps.
