any ideas which version?

On Thursday 24 January 2002 00:07, you spoke unto me thusly:

AMD XP cpu's are not affected from this bug. I heard that the problem is
fixed at some stepping version of thunderbird.

RE: [newbie] AMD CPU bug

2002-01-24 Thread Franki

dunno, but I have been using a AthlonXP1800 with an Nvidia AGP card for ages
now, (3 months.) and its been fine and VERY stable for me...

XP is in fact a new CPU,, its not a thunderbird core like the 1.4 athlon..
(I think the new one might be called palimino,, can't remember for sure,
just know its not a t'bird.)

having said that, I don't in fact know if they have the AGP prob or not,
just that I haven't seen the problem myself..

from what i read, it only affects machines which use AGP. and whose
kernals are compiled to pentium or better type cpu's. the bug occurs
becoz the athlon / duron processors have a bug when dealing with
extended paging in conjunction with AGP. You can read more about it as
well as find a quick fix to the problem here:
  http://www.gentoo.org/

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but would this affect an XP1800?

actually, a good question

yes i think it would, all the 500 (i think) and higher cpus are
duron/athlon.
i think that the xp is a naming convention only and is not actually a
different processor. this is only my understanding though, i haven't
followed hardware too close in the last year or so...

does anyone else know if the xp cpus are affected?

Here's more than you probably want to know (and more than I understand)
on this issue - from a linux distribution site (gentoo), AMD and a
kernel developer.

Bottom line: Seems like a problem. There is a fix. The fix may result in
a performance hit (and I have an Athlon XP 1700!). The kernel folks are
working on it!

first as it has some context)

[newbie] AMD CPU bug

2002-01-21 Thread shane

http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/3/23749.html

anyone know anything about this? i have not personally had more than 2
crashes with mandrake since i started using it with 7.1, and i am on an
athelon, but the news makes it sound like only _some_ cpus are affected.

if you use the fix and are not affected are you taking a performance hit for
nothing?

The bug only effects 2.4 kernels and they will be fixed automatically
with 2.4.18 kernels hopefully. It has been known for windoze 2k and
patched for more than 1 year.
