It plays mp3 from an inbuilt mp3 player, but does it play mp3 from burnt
 to CD ?
 Just curious.

Just fine. I've burnt a couple MP3 CDs to cd-r cd-rw and the player
handles them fine. ONe thing I noticed is that I have one recently
burned CD (used gcombust on a number of radio mystery theater mp3s
that had been cluttering up my hard drive) and the Sony portable
plays the mp3s in a different order than my koss dvd/cd/mp3 component
player does.

Note the claim to write as many as 30 albums to one CD using supplied
software on a 700 MB disc.

Why you'd need the supplied software is anyone's guess. Maybe they're
selling to OS users that have no software? :)

I just wondered whether Sony had come up with some new format that
enables more data to be written to disc. Like as not ATRAC3plus is just
some marketing ploy to sell you mp3 by another name. Who knows.

atrac3 is a different format, using a difference compression engine to
mp3.

it claims comparable audio quality to mp3 (128kbps) at atrac3
(64kbps).

atrac3plus is a refined version of atrac3 that claims even better
compression. i think sony claimed similar quality at 48kbps.

OK, here it is , I think you may still need to dl the file
 attatched to
hd and open in in gimp and then rescale the image to say 300% to

easily. The original text was so small it's practically unreadable
without a magnifying glass, at any rate for me.

 John

Well, it does say *maximum* of 30 albums, which is pretty meaningless.
I think my granddaughter's player says something like 'around 100
tracks', which doesn't mean much either, since a track can vary from
~2.5 minutes to 5 minutes.

Don't have a ready pic, but I have one of these things, from Sony. I'm
skeptical of the Atrac software. MP3s work and I have used them
extensively in the past two weeks - I just came back from vacation in
Portland, and I had a couple of burned mp3 and other cds along for the
very long train ride.

I suppose so. But the albums could be subdirectories, and you could
fit a large number of different albums on one cd using the mp3 format,
of course. My limited experience with the sony player seems to suggest
that it is quite good at what it does, although the headphones which are
supplied aren't too terribly good since the felt earpieces have already
fallen off them and I've only had the player a few weeks now. The
batteries which I use (Rayovac renewable/rechargeable alkaline) lasts
for quite a while before I have to recharge them, but not nearly as long
as the manual suggests (60+ hours for Sony AA). I don't see how mp3
takes less battery power then regular CDs, but Sony claims it does. One
would think that there needs to be extra processing power required
to play mp3, vs. regular CDs. Perhaps the thing spins down?

I'd ignore the Aflac thing because the software seems to be Windows
centric and mp3 works just fine. I don't see any superiority over mp3
and (too bad) the player doesn't support ogg (neither does my desktop
player).

So far it's done a very good job otherwise.

OK, so one of my daughters has just bought herself a new walkman CD

So does anyone know anything about ATRAC3plus ?
 Is it any good ?
Seems to imply it's something new that with an ordinary CD writer
you can get 30 audio CD's onto one CD without loss of quality. Hmm.

I'm hoping to try something similar for my granddaughter. I assume
that you create the mp3s on your hdd, then just burn them as data.

Iburn about 8 to 9 CDs onto one disk using GripLame and play them back
with a no-name cd/mp3 player $39.95 @ Fry's works just fine
but 30 CDs' kinda pushing it

That's what I thought, but that is what the publicity on theSony

a 1:1 image file of the claim only the text is very small, and a
1:1 scan is hardly
readable, and if I rescale it upwards it comes out more than 100kb.
Is this
