Thanks Doug. AOL doesn't do much for me either but I was hoping to at least
get internet access using it for the time being. I've tried to find something
about AOL for Linux and couldn't. Seems I'm pretty limited in my area as to
what's available so I guess I'll be stuck using Windows-AOL for a while
longer to get online.

Not having much luck. I could only find one ISP called Talarion Dialup for
$12 a month. Unfortunately I live just outside a big city in Florida which is
still behind the times. Sucks cause I'm from NYC and still not adjusted to
the boonies.

I haven't been able to find another ISP with an access number neaby.
Roadrunner etc. is not available either. Argh. Does anyone have experience
with Talarion?

I've been using Mindspring (/Earthlink) nearly a year very happily. Moved from a
metro of 2 million plus to less than 70k recently and the service is as good.
$20.00/ month ... check out this URL:

Debby:
Check out earthlink.net. They have dialup available in a lot of small
places -- they even have two local numbers here in little bitty old
Goldsboro, NC. They merged with Mindspring earlier this year, and Mindspring
was pretty damn big in the southeast. If that doesn't do it for you,
somewhere there are is a site that lists a bunch of ISP's -- local,
regional, and national -- and rates them based on user input. Sorry, but it
seems that I have sent my link to the great bitbucket in the sky. Maybe a
search on Google would be useful. Believe me, there is more in life than
AOL.

[newbie] Can't Connect To Internet

2000-10-29 Thread FeralDM

I am a struggling newbie trying to teach myself Mandrake 7.1. I am unable to
get connected to the internet. I am probably still in Windows mode. I've been
using AOL as my ISP. Now that I've installed Mandrake, configured my modem
etc., can I still use AOL? I'm assuming not because I keep getting an error
telling me there is no file to open the AOL program. So do what app do I use
to get back online? Do I need to change service providers?

Please forgive how stupid I must sound. Greatly appreciate any help from
"teachers" out there as I am serious about learning.

Thank you!

well aol and compuserve are practically the same i am working on configuring
compuserve to work on linux based on some success stories, although i seem to
not have that success yet, you wont get much though all that crap aol
provided will be non existent so i suggest getting a new isp, if you are
going to keep windows and like aol on that then just find a temporary isp for
your linux box, there are plenty of low priced or free isps out there. i will
jot down your address and tell you if i succeeded in hooking up compuserve
and i will test aol based on the same script.

have fun

Here's something I ranted about approximately a year ago...

Try the following link--it is a BBS/Message board that deals with free ISPs.
Sift through the mesages, and visit the providers' web pages to find a
couple that are in your area. When you find some you like, you can apply for
accounts.

Set up your Linux dial-up (and, actually your Windows dial-up) for one or
more of these accounts, according to the information from the message board.
Dial in using each of the ones you've chosen to make sure you've set things
up correctly.

When you're comfortable that you have a dial-up connection that is fairly
reliable (and you may need to check occasionally for other free ISPs), then
you can call AOL and have them reduce your monthly charge from what, $23?,
to $9.95. In windows, you would dial up using the free ISP account(s), and
then start AOL, enter the Setup windows, and change the connection type to
TCP/IP. You won't use AOL to dial the internet anymore, but you will have
full access to their services and avoid paying their redicoulously
over-priced monthly fees. (I pay only $5-$7 more per month for a +/- 1Mbps
cable connection--so paying to dial into AOL at 56Kbps or less just seems
absurd to me).

I pay $40 a month with RoadRunner in Tampa, FL. I think it's well worth it,
considering you'd pay almost taht much with a regular phone ISP and a second
line. Plus it's so dang fast, I'd pay way over $40 for it anyways.

Thats what I pay for Optimum Online (Cablevisions cable ISP). If you
have Cablevisions cable tv service as well, you get it for $30 a
month.

Its going to cost more than that, I believe, as you have to have a

no i actually saw a web page for this which advertised two way connection via
satelite dish, no dial up!
if i can find the site again i will post it for you
