Nope, this doesn't work either

Why should this be a problem? The doc clearly shows that all you need to
do is enter a few simple things in kppp... I am confused.

No matter what I try, I am still getting this error message:

authenticate itself but I couldn't find any secret (password) which would
let it use an IP address.

Can someone explain what this means?

Re: [newbie] Can't connect to the internet....

2000-05-03 Thread Dean Jenkins

Hi Kirk,

I think your system is requesting the remote system to authenticate. This is
unnecessary. Your system only needs answer the authentication request from the
remote system. This feature allows both peers to mutually authenticate for
added security.

You need to add the keyword "noauth" (without quotes) to kppp script and
remove "auth" if present. I think this can also be done in the GUI. This
should turn off the request to the remote system for authentication.

If you havn't turned on the debug logging for kppp then do so as you will find
it easier to debug. Next time you have a problem please insert an extract of
the log as this will aid 3rd parties in helping you. Make sure any passwords
and user ids are replaced by * in your E-mail to maintain your security.

Dean.

I have set up a connection with Kppp. Everything goes ok, the modem
connects, but the ppp demon says that it dies when the password is
requested, and I get a message, from the log, saying it could not find
the secret password... What's going on?

The adapter address is hardware and you don't need to worry about that. You
need to input the IP, subnet, gateway, and also the DNS IP (yes it is
different from your IP).

I don't understand this part of your message:

incorrect DNS addies entered for your card

Does my card itself have an address associated with it? The only address
info I have is : adapter address, IP, subnet mask, and default gateway.
 Is
the DNS address different from the IP?

 Hello all,

I am running Mandrake 7.0 and I cannot get on the internet with Netscape. I
have a PCMCIA card and usually connect through a cable modem or DSL line. I
have received some suggestions and followed them:

I went to /etc/resolv.conf and entered
 nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.

but this didn't work. Here is the error message I received when trying to
 connect:

"warning the following hosts are unknown
 home.netscape.com
 home6.netscape.com
 internic.net

Perhaps there is a problem with your name server? If your site must use a
non-root nameserver, you will need to set the $SOCKS_NS environment variable
to point at the appropriate name server. blah blah blah"

I am very frustrated and would appreciate some help.

 thanks,

 Andrew

I tried hand editing that file and got errors. I used linuxconf to set the DNS
numbers and now it works.

Go into Drakconf, select Network Configuration. If you have anything set in
primary gateway, or the incorrect DNS addies entered for your card, it may
prevent correct dns resolution. I had the samething happening when I was
attempting to set up internet sharing with another computer and forgot to
remove that ip addie and dns address from in there.

in the DNS tab of your setup. it worked for me.
