RE: RE: [newbie] Compiling the 2.6.11 Kernel ?

2005-04-07 Thread Hugh Dixon
My "idiot sheet" says:
"make clean bzImage modules" to build the kernel
"make modules_install install" to install the kernel.

Hopefully this this put the new kernel in your bootloader, and set it to the
default next time you boot. I have had occasional trouble with the default
bit. Hopefully it will work!

Thanks Hugh,

That would be great.

I downloaded the source from www.kernel.org

I'm not at a Linux machine at the moment, but my recollection from when
I have done this is that there is no need to copy any files anywhere.
The make has an install option for the kernel as well as the modules.
Something like "make install modules_install". My recollection is that
the order of the parameters is very important - but I cannot remember
what that order is!
If no one gets back to you, I'll try to post something in 9 or 10 hours
time

BTW Where did you download your 2.6.11 source from?

Hugh

[newbie] Compiling the 2.6.11 Kernel ?

2005-04-06 Thread Pete Moscatt

I am trying to compile my first kernel (2.6.11) using the source. The distro
this
is for is Mandrake 10.0.

I have had a look through the README file but reading this has me unsure on the
correct process.

Firstly I untar'd it an placed it in '/usr/src'

>From there I ran 'make configold' as root and make the additional changes as
required. Once this was complete I did a 'make' then 'make modules_install'

All as gone great so far with no reported errors.

I copied the'bzImage' from ../arch/i386/boot directory and placed this in /boot
as
vmlinux-2.6.11

>From here doubt has crept in - am I meant to copy anything else into the /boot
directory ?

I then edited the lilo.conf and added a line to look at the 'vmlinux-2.6.11'
image,
now what about the line that has the initrd=...what do I need to do
here ?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Pete
