Yes, names are not stored on cd-audio format. When you insert an audio
cd, the player (i.e. grip) calculates a 'hash' value based on the index
of the cd and uses it as a keyword to retrieve the titles from e.g.
freedb.freedb.org. If it manages to get them, it stores them on your
local disk (typically under $HOME/.cddb) , so next time you play the cd
you don't need to be connected to get the titles.

  2. If I want to play the mp3 files on a music box or a TV/DVD player
what riper and format shall I use?
I use xmms for mp3/wav, grip to play/rip/encode audio cd.

  3. What is the differences in the encoder: oggenc, mp3encoder,
bladeenc, lame, l3enc, xingmp3enc, gogo, flac?
You already got some answers to this. Let me add that lame is not
included in the MDK cds for license issues (lame uses an encoding algo
which is patented by Fraunhofer Institute). Whenever I need to install
it, I download the sources from the official lame site
(http://lame.sourceforge.net/) and build them.

One caution Lame is a CPU intensive app and will slow your system down
noticeably

[newbie] Griping questions

2004-04-28 Thread rhein
Hello,
I'm using for the first time grip and I'm quiet impressed of the speed
and stability (I read my mail, download with Kget and rip a audio cd at
the same time)
But I have some questions after I red the help files:

  1. To get the name of the tracks do you have to be connected? I tried
first disconnected and I got no names and all the tracks finished
in the last track (in fact the following track erased the one
before) after I got connected to get my messages I saw the names
of the tracks in grip... I concluded that there is something going on.
  2. If I want to play the mp3 files on a music box or a TV/DVD player
what riper and format shall I use?
  3. What is the differences in the encoder: oggenc, mp3encoder,
bladeenc, lame, l3enc, xingmp3enc, gogo, flac?
I'm doing that the first time under linux so I'm a little lost with all
those acronyms ;-)
Bye
Christophe

stick with lame for MP3s, oggenc for ogg files
Lame Aint amp3 Encoder= l.a.m.e
oggenc=ogg encoder
mp3encoder =mp3 encoder

Ok I tried to use lame but I get this error message: invalid encoder
executable. Check your encoder config
So I went to the config and ther I have this:
Encoder executable: lame
Encoder command-line: -h -b %b %w %m
Encoder file format: ~/mp3/%A/%d/%t_%n.mp3

So what shall I do to get mp3 files?
Thank you
Christophe
ps: What is the ogg format for?

Sounds like you do not have lame installed. You need to get it from a plf
repository since it is illegal to make mp3's without paying Frauenhaufer a
royalty in the countries that recognize the compression patent. For
instance, it is illegal in the United States to download and use lame.

So I went to the config and ther I have this:
 Encoder executable: lame
 Encoder command-line: -h -b %b %w %m
 Encoder file format: ~/mp3/%A/%d/%t_%n.mp3

Ogg is a free (GPL'd) audio compression format that does not require royalty
payments to anyone. Many people think it sounds better than mp3,
particularly at the lower bitrates and it has the added bonus of creating
smaller file sizes. One drawback is that it is not supported by many
hardware players right now, but more support is coming. iriver supports it
with a firmware upgrade for it's players and there are a few others. Also,
most of the non-MS software players support it now, like winamp, and of
course all the linux based software players support it.
