[newbie] How do I burn the CD?

1999-06-28 Thread Griffin, Michael

I am downloading the i386 folder from the ftp site (a friend said that this
was the right folder). I want to make a cd with it. I have a windoze
machine with a cd burner and adaptec easy cd creator software. I would like
to know if there are any special parameters or configurations etc. that I
need to set in the adaptec software in order to get the cd to work correctly
for linux. If I need to give more info let me know.

thanx

You need more than just the I386 folder. I would recommend you download the
ISO file if yoru CD Writer will write ISO's.

Actually, an easier way (if you have the bandwidth to download the whole thing anyway)
would be to go to the iso/ folder on one of the ftp sites and download the file
"mandrake60-1.iso" which is an image of the whole mandrake cd (version 6 anyway, are
earlier ones still available?) The ftp directory page even gives instructions on how
to burn the image if you've never created a cd from an image before. No special
settings needed.

The easiest and safest thing is to download the ISO image, and follow the
simple instructions to burn it. Find a mirror near you that carries the
image (ie. ftp://linux.origo.no).

You can download an burn a cdrom image (prolly the best idea if your new)
the image is in:
/packages/Mandrake/iso/ (of your chosen download site)
the image file is mandrake60-1.iso (or something like that.
the readme file tells how to bur it under easy cd creator.

this image is all you need.

BUT! when you install it you'll have to update some packages, including
the kernel, so your cd image won't realy be a perfect working copy on
mandrake.

...you could just download the trees with the updates as well, but there's
too much room for error if you ask me...and if your new to it all, it's
more confusing than worth while.

From the web page:
Linux-Mandrake Downloads: distribution, iso image, updates and
   applications

You must at least download the "Mandrake/" and "images/"
trees from the
   "6.0/" directory. It's about 500 Mb.
An iso9660 image of Linux-Mandrake is also available .
You can use such
a file for easy CD-burning (under Windows, you can use Easy
CD Pro or
Easy CD Creator, check our notice here - version en franais
ici). It's about
600 Mb (one file only). Important Notes: the iso file
(mandrake53-2.iso) is
available in the "iso/" directory. The file "iso-md5sum" is
only needed for
   binary integrity checking.
