Hello Everyone,
I have a quick question for the list. Has anyone gotten a HP Deskjet
722C to work in Mandrake Linux 6.1. If anyone has I really would appreciate
some help on this matter. Thanks and have a nice day!

Sincerely,

All of the printers in the HP 7xx series are winprinters. there are some
workarounds that soem have claimed to have found, but I doubt you'll get full
functionality. these printers rely on winblows software to function.

I had the same question just the other week and as I understand it the 722c
is a winprinter. Kind of like a winmodem. It used windows resources to
operate and there for does not work on linux. I have bee told that someone
is backwards engineering the windows driver and porting it to linux however
I have not been able to find it. I was luck and had an older HP 694c that
works fine. A little slower and not as good quality as the 722c but it
works with linux.

Actually it will print only in BW for now, but will work soon in color... go to
www.freshmeat.net and search there. The problem is that DeskJet 700+, and some
others use
their own propeierty protocol (This sux) and not the usual protocol like DeskJet 69x
etc...

I'm afraid the 7xx series of HP InkJets are winprinters. You probably won't
get much luck getting it to print normally in Linux. If you purchased
recently, see if the merchant will exchange it for something in the 69x series
(if still available). They work flawlessly w/Linux.

[newbie] HP Deskjet 722C

1999-08-19 Thread BryanMoorehead

I am trying to print from Linux to an HP DeskJet 722C that is attached to a
win98 machine named KB0498 and IP address of 192.168.1.3.
In the Linux Print Tool, I am unsure which printer to choose. There seems to be
drivers for 5xxx,6xxx, and 8xxx, but not 7xxx. I have tried most of them with
no success. That is, the ASCII Test from PrintTool shows up in the Printer
Queue, but never prints. Well, when I first ran the setup and did an ASCII
print, I managed to get a page to the printer that consisted of a single line of
text, but after that, nothing would make it out of the spooler. I see the
lights on the hub blinking, and I can ping 192.168.1.3 so I know they are
communicating. Now I DO have the same printer shared on my NT Server
box(KB01NT, 192.168.1.1) I know, NT should at as the print server, but I've
gotta be different. I have tried configuring the printer to go through the NT
box to no avail, figuring that since the printer is shared, it could somehow be
found. I guess what I'm trying to ask is Does anybody know if a driver is
available for the HP 722C in case that is the problem, AND/OR can anyone tell
from the rambling information above if I am going about this in the right way?

Thanks,

Hi Bryan,
I'm a newbie also, but I believe that your HP 722C requires windows
software to work. In other words the printer equivalent of a "winmodem". One
of the gurus on this list may have a work around for you, especially since you
are networked with an NT box.
Good Luck,

I believe you'll have to set up SAMBA to get NT to act as

the postcript driver is usually a safe bet.

this sounds less like a printer driver problem and more like a network
configuration problem, and specifically with samba. Try running smbclient
with the appropraite switches (man smbclient, or just smbclient to get the
help). basically, you should be able to see the printer listed when you
run this smb client.. After that, try putting in a username into the
printer's config (under the samba section in printtool).

Select Postscript printer. Linux has only a very basic driver for
the 722 (no color) which is sort-of a WINPrinter. Just use the postscript
driver and let windows use its driver for the major work. On the
windows machine, make sure you have shared out the printer both through
the "Network Neighborhood" settings and by right-clicking the printer icon
and setting it to shared.
Finally, make sure you have a good copy of printtool from the Mandrake
Update site, and the latest Samba. Many things, including the print
script for samba and the filter routines, are broken in previous versions
(including RedHat 6.0, where it began).

Ok...I looked at the "Linux Printer Compatibiltiy" web site
and was really tempted to go more to the HP side,
especially since they say they're supported under DOS 3.3
and above. My thinking on that was that if they're
supported by DOS 3.3, they CAN'T require any special

I guess what HP means when they say it'll work under DOS is
that it'll print black white text! :-)

It's supposed to be an HP printer in disguise -- Apollo

And, further, go to
http://www.httptech.com/ppa/
The driver works for files output by ghostscript and makes the files
to be sent to the printer.
It uses what HPcalls "Performance Printing Architecture", a system
that puts more of the calculation for printing on the CPU and allows the
printer to have les hardware. HPdeveloped drivers for Windows,
and left it at that. They ALSO decided that they would keep the protocols
secret. What is displayed on this web page is what someone could
intuit from looking at the files sent to the printer, and it works for
the 720 (710), 820, and 1000 series in BW if you also use the ghostscript
filter and you have the printer direct connected to the linux machine.
This case is different, since NTknows how to handle the printer
and also what to do with incoming files bound for the printer
