a good checksum does help eliminate a lot of potential problems.

most glad to see you will succumb to checksum. :)

You've been advised about the smug arrogant attitude before. We're not
all as brilliant and sophisticated as you, sorry. Give it a rest.

BTW, how do you know it had anything at all to do with checksums? He
said it could've been a bad ISO, but we discussed during this thread
many other possible reasons, including Windows adding erroneous
extensions or associations.

Just take it easy, it's a newbie list.

Well, honestly, what happened the first few times was i was just
burning everything as a straight data Cd like i would for a windows
program. that caused me 2 days of problems. to go along with that,
i did move the iso images around on my hard drive and i'm sure that
didn't help matters, winblows probably re-arranged some things on
it's own for me. thanks mr gates.

how many hours have i spent with what? trying to get the Cds
working right and a good install or how many hours have i spent
playing around with mandrake? the installi won't even attempt to
count. there were problems. as far as playing with mandrake
itself...i've been splitting my time between windows and mandrake.
it's a slow transition for me, and i still have no clue how to set up the
mail stuff (see another e-mail i sent out for details).

i'd almost be willing to put money on the problem being the way i
was burning the CDs. hands down. although next time i will do the

As frustrated as you have been, I hope you can come to see that you have
some place to go when things just aren't going your way. Everybody needs
a place like that, you know? :0)

Earlier on you were having problems with the Windows association to
WinRAR, so I popped in what I knew was confusing you and some others. I
just want to address this once more for your own clarity, and because as
a Windows user still, this is important to know.

WinRAR is a very powerful archive tool, and considered the best GUI
interfaced program of its kind in that platform. The latest version have
improved in that they can now natively work with ISO images. This isn't
a plus for those of us who might be downloading/burning Linux ISO's from
Windows. We don't want to open then in Windows for any reason. Outside
of that, being able to open, extract from, add to, and even create our
own ISO's is a very cool feature. I've been using WinRAR for a long time
and prefer it over any other choice in Windows. If having WinRAR
associate ISO's to itself causes you concern, no problem. Go into the
preferences of the program and find the section that handles
associations, then uncheck the last one for ISO's. Windows Explorer and
My Computer (one in the same) will change the icons on all ISO's to the
plain generic I don't know what this is! icon.

I was also wondering if you had both My Computer and Windows Explorer
set to show details. In M$'s infinite lack of wisdom, file details are
turned off. All you have to help you figure out what a file is, is just
the icon. Terribly confusing. If this has been turned off, you should
turn it on. As you make the transition from Windows to Linux, you will
come to appreciate seeing the full name of the files you have on your
system.

Good luck as you transcend to a higher and more rewarding plane of
computing. Remember, it's OK to get mad while in Linux. It's only
temporary, and relief stays with you a long time...unlike in Windows.

[newbie] Install - iit's working...almost

2003-06-16 Thread crak600
ok, well, i havn't actually done the install yet. but i did do a fresh
download of all 3 CDs last night. i re-burned CD one by telling it to
create a CD from an ISO image. then went to install again and it
actually went into the install! but i restarted the computer once i
realized that it was going to work. why? because i wanted to re-
burn CD 2 and 3 so i can get everything installed at once instead of
having to go back in and do it later. so once i'm done burning cd2
and 3, i'll be doing a full install (as long as the downloaded files are
good). so about an hour before i go back into the install process.
it's 1pm EST, so if there's anything i need to know before doing the
install, i guess i've got about an hour to know.

i do want to say thank you to everyone that has given me help and
suggestions since i first posted yesterday and for putting up with my
ranting and frustration. thanks again!

sorry.

simple...fresh download on all 3 ISO images, didn't move them
around in my hard drive, which i was guilty of diong before to make
space, using a partitioned 20GB hard drive and barely have any
room left on it. i did order a 100GB hard drive last week to add to
my system, so space will no longer be a problem. and i do have
enough space on the current hard drive to install linux. went into my
CD maker and simply clicked on the create CD from ISO image.
done.

i could've possibly downloaded a bad or incomplete ISO image
before (which i could still possibly have, i havn't done the install yet),
or i could've moved something around in the hard drive and ended
up losing a minute packet of info in a move. i'd say chalk it up to
user error.

CD 3 is halfway done burning...will be installing in about 20 minutes.

but if bad/incomplete image is a possible problem,
then you REALLY should read up on md5 checksums

Just one word of warning - if you're drastically short of space that
can cause you some problems. If that's so, wait until the new disk
comes.

Good luck
