I finally gave up trying to install those releases on those particular
machines and went with either Redhat or Slackware. The rest of
the machines had no problem with any version of
 Linux-Mandrake - go figure!

It came down to the motherboards in the end. No combination of
hardware would install LM on those motherboards (and I can make
a lot of combinations with 4 brands of cdrom and 5 brands of hard
drives - IDE and SCSI, not to mention the various controllers I tried).

I have that problem with Red-Hat 7.0!!
What a dud

2000-12-19 Thread Mike

I am experiencing the install problem with a store bought version of
Mandrake 7.2, a couple of times I was able to hit F12 at the precise moment
to get the installer to bypass loading the RAMDISK, but the install faulted
later on, and have never been able to sucessfully install a Linux OS, I
starting with the Mandrake 7.2 Powerpack Deluxe and have had no luck!!

I had this problem and this was the deal.
I downloaded the iso from a site and burned it. It turns out the the ISO
was messed up (eventhough the md5sums checked out?)
after downloading a new ISO , the problem cleared up. Also, use a
download
manager. I remember something about netscape or IE not downloading the
iso
images right (something about one section of the iso not downloading in
 binary)
I know this sounds kinda half-assed, but it worked.

Subject: [newbie] Install Hang on "in second stage install"

   Greetings,
I have a Dell Inspiron 3200 laptop, and I experimented some this
summer with LM 7.0, with my 4 gig harddrive equally partioned between
Windows 98 and LM 7.0. Finally I decided I was ready to make the move
 to
a Microsoft free computer (plus I had no room left on my hard drive),
so
 I
figured i'd install 7.2. Only I'm having a devil of a time trying to
 get
it to install. My computer boots from my Cd-Rom, and I get the
opening
mandrake screen. no matter what mode I choose for install (text,
 expert,
etc.), the install always hangs in the same place. I get a window
 saying
intializing Cd-rom, then Loading second stage ram disc. Then in the
bottom left hand corner appears "in second stage install". Suddenly
the
Cd stops spinning and nothing happens, I've left it like that
overnight
   before.
I've tried everything I could think of, booting from a floppy,
cleaning my cd drive. I even have a friend with the same laptop so i
borrowed his drive and the same thing happened. The burn seems to be
fine, I at least got past "second stage install" in testing it on my
friends desktop. I've had no other problems with my cd drive. It's a
Toshiba CD-ROM XM-1702BC that came with my laptop.
I was just curious if anyone else had this problem, or could give
   some tips for a solution.

   Thanks,
 Brad
