Re: [newbie] Installed ppp daemon
Well, I followed the link you provided me and wrote down the info for my modem listed under WindowsME. Logged into Linux under root. I am completely new to Linux so terms like "terminal" and the like have no meaning whatsoever. Nevertheless, I did figure how to get into terminal and typed in the first command line. There I saw the info that Linux could display. But when it came to cd /root and the rest of the lines I had to type it I was completely lost. I did managed to type in the setserialcommand but the link stated to edit with "jed or a similiar editing program". I don't know if I even have such a program on my box. After all of this typing I went to see if anything worked and when I tried to connect Linux told me my modem was busy. Any further info is appreciated.
Re: [newbie] Installed ppp daemon
Well, tried configuring the system to get my modem working but Linux tells me that "Sorry, the modem is busy". Apparently, I might have to breakdown and get another modem that is compatiable with Linux.
Re: [newbie] Installed ppp daemon
I appreciate the help your link although turned out to be a dead end with an error message about the site no longer existing. I was hoping, what my last sentence meant, to download any patch up or Linux driver for my modem. The modem is less than a month old and would hate to replace it just to log on to the net through Linux.

Please advise me directly if you are running KDE, if so I will give you the step by step that I followed last week on my new installation. I doubt that you will need to buy another modem, but I did need to buy a new video card. The longer I use Linux the more impressed I am so persist! It's not easy to learn, but once learned it is easy to use. Cheers -- Bob Parker

RE: [newbie] Installed ppp daemon
Mr. Pena , Before you breakdown and buy a new modem give me a day to get my instructions together and I'll try to talk you step by step through it as I had the same problem with mine and it is an identical modem as yours Actiontec PCI call waiting modem. The book instructions are a little confusing, but was able to get mine working like a champ. I too got the looking for modem and then modem is busy errors. I will reply later tonight with the info. I'm also new to the Linux community and have to learn as I go but the collective effort of all has helped immensely. I'll tell you what worked for me and should also work for you. RE: [newbie] Installed ppp daemon
Mr. Pena, Well here goes, I'll try to keep brief but write this like I wish someone had been able to do for me. First sign in as root to KDE as this is the easy (most similar to Microsoft interface) then after your in click on the K to bring up the menu then go to Configuration, then to KDE, then to Information, from there go to PCI. Here you will be able to get the information required about your modem , scroll down and look for communication device or some similar wording immediately following that you will find the information you will need for continuing on look for the irq (in my case it was irq 11) as well as the address code (should look like this) 0xdc00 0xdc01 0xdc02 or something similar in my case it was (0xdc00) write both these down also look for uart 16550A as you will need that as well. Once you have this information written down close the window i.e. click the x in the upper corner then , look on your desktop for an icon that says Home and open it, look on the tree and click on root then look on the tree again and open the one labeled etc, after that scroll down and look for a folder labeled rcd.local left click it to open it . Then look for a file labeled rc.local right click on it to open a menu look for open with and then advanced editor. Right click advanced editor you now will see a bunch of commands scroll down to the bottom and add the following command as the last line in that window: setserial /dev/modem uart 16550A port 0xdc00 irq 11 making sure that it is with all the spaces and case sensitive commands substitute your port address with the one you wrote down as well as your irq setting as the ones I put in there for the example are the ones for mine. Next click file and save it then exit and reboot . then when you log in the next time and give it a try it should work . This is how I set mine and every time I log in it works I also found this works with a actiontec pci fax/modem which according to the documentation isn't supposed to but worked for me. Let me know how it works for you. As always good luck and hang in there . [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Well, managed on my own to install the missing pppd all by myself. I have to say that normally I would be proud of figuring it out myself if it weren't for the fact it took forever. The help files was as useful as a MS help file. Anyway now my problem is that Linux cannot communicate with my modem. It "sees" it but can't talk in order to set up my Internet account. For some reason through DrakeHard or if I have that backwards. Can't work with it because its a winmodem. As I understand it a winmodem is software based right? I have a CreativeLabs Modem Blaster flash56 PCI. It is also listed as HCFMODEM. What is it I am missing and do I need to download something. = HFC modem is a winmodem. Only a very small handful of these cheapies have had workable drivers written for them in linux, usually because manufactures do not cooperate and force willing developer to do considerable reverse engineering to get them to work. You can check the "linmodem" site to see if yours is supported, or (my advice) buy a decent external modem. Even when winmodems to work, they are using processor cycles to do the job of real modem hardware. Just my $0.02, Mike -- "Many loads of beer were brought.
