[newbie] Mandrake Off Topic list

2003-02-16 Thread Mark Weaver
Hi all,

Given the amount of traffic and passion related over the last few days
concerning things totally off topic where Mandrake Linux is concerned
has led me to a place where I'm willing to try an experiment of sorts.

I've created a mailing list for anyone here on the newbie and expert
lists where they can freely talk about all the off topic stuff they have
a need for. The link to sign up is below.

http://mdw1982.dyndns.org/mailman/listinfo/mandrakeot

If you wish to subscibe by sending a message to the list software you
can use the email address below.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

The format for the command is as follows, while the subject header is
meaningless to the list software.

In the body of the message place this information as you see it:

subscribe your.password plain [EMAIL PROTECTED]

your.password = a password of your choice
your.email.addy = your email address.

Example subscribe command:

	subscribe password plain [EMAIL PROTECTED]

All are welcome.

Good idea, thanks for offering that. I see you're using Mailman. I have
a script that will generate list statistics on a monthly basis:

Attempted posts, successful posts, Total bytes, Top 10 posters, Top 10 threads.

I also run posts through stripmime, cause HTML really messes up the
archives.

If you're into stats, I can send you that script.

Todd

Thanks Mark! I subscribed. Politics and/or religion have no place
on a public mailing list not for such discussion (hyperbole), and
only serve to eventually be hurtful. Even buried comments in
 otherwise on topic posts.
I also applaud Todd Lyons for his bucket of ice water on such
 offenders. Thanks Todd

I'm testing that now. I'm waiting eagerly for the chance to get stuck
in with all those gun-toting, Muslim-hating, Republican,
Idaho-survivalist types ;-)

yeah...it's looking that way, however I may be able to relay through a
server I have running at work. That'll have to wait till monday though
when I got back into the office. That machine has a static IP address that
is DNSable.

Mark,

Sounds great! I had to do a similar thing myself for the Northern Colorado
Linux Users Group. I, and others were sending through Linux jobs as we found
them, and some people became irate and considered it off-topic, so i put up a
jobsite to appease them and still keep others informed of Linux and open
source positions in the area. It has worked very well. Good Luck with your
effort.
