Personally I think that is really cool. I guess it must be some sort of
cron job? Skimming off some of the O/P from uptime?

Wish I knew how to do that!

[newbie] OT - Spyware

2003-07-20 Thread Chris
On another list I belong to a question was asked of me whether spyware/adware
can be placed on a Linux system. I doubt it can be, but I told the list I
would find out. So, can it?

Strictly speaking, no. But it is *theoretically* possible.

1. Use of non-opensource software, not open to scrutiny and therefore
could contain malware.

2. Trojans, you download a file thinking it's whatever, you execute
it, it loads a trojan on your system called a rootkit. Always a good
idea to scan for these with chkrootkit, if I remember the name
correctly.

The more important question is, and I believe there was a thread on this
previously, can you *scan* for spyware/adware, and I believe there is
software available, do not know a name offhand.

I guess I really should have said I don't know, I guess anything is
therotically possible, but less probable on a linux machine as compared to a
windows machine.

Whats a really good site or two to send them to that will
answer some of there questions and fears about setting up a Linux
 system.

Here is an email i sent to a friend awhile ago. I edited out all the
broken links.
Not too revealing, but hopefully somewhat helpful.
I included the twiki site for mandrake: it's a great example of the
amount of support you get from friends.

have
windows and mac, too...

http://www.distrowatch.com/ Talks about many distros

To a certain extent ..yes , Opera for example (the free version)
However thankfully most of that crap is windows-centric
(Just another of the 1001 reasons that Linux rocks)

No.
The linux browsers are not based on the same technology - the backend
technology. Programs cannot be automagically installed behind the
scenes with a browser - Microsoft uses ACTIVEX components in their
browser which literally have direct access to the registry and are
literally built to install software without intervention from the
end-user.
