How can I get copies of the originals, which I would rename as

Give us a list of the ones that you think you have overwritten. There
probably aren't that many, and someone here will have originals that
you can have.

Egads - every single .conf that resides on my system has been gone
through with a fine toothed comb, modified, remodified, re-remodified,
had comments and jeers thrown into them, profanity runs rampant through
them, dirty ASCII pictures in some...gee, I dunno if I'd be able to
submit even one clean .conf file to this project...(hmmm...almost
sounds like notes and comments in the kernel source code, ya reckon?)

Stephen, I can't believe that there's one file on your computer that
hasn't enjoyed your attentions g I doubt if rikons's list would be
too long - unless he's been playing a lot longer than he would have
us believe.

A list member was kind enough to send me the original file for samba,
and I found it to be quite helpful in understanding how to get samba
working. It gave me a lot of info after my original was SWATted. :-) I
ran across a few sample conf files that were set up to different
things, and these were also helpful. I guess I'm just a plagiarist at

Thanks. I really appreciate your offer. Part of the problem is that in
using the GUI, I don't know what files are being changed. I find I go
back to looking at a file when there is a problem or question, and by
then the comments are gone. I thought it might be nice to get copies
of all the originals, just in case, and for additional learning when
needed.

[newbie] Original .conf files?

2003-06-07 Thread rikona
Hello,

As a complete newbie, I didn't realize the value of the comments in
the original conf files, and didn't know that the various setup
programs would overwrite so many of the comments. It would be nice to
see all the originals. Is there a place on the install disks where
these are stored? At first glance, it seems as though these are
'installed' via rpms - if so, wouldn't this overwrite the ones I have
now?

How can I get copies of the originals, which I would rename as .orig,
of course.

If you know the package names, you can probably extract them from the original
packages. I think the relevant command is cpio or something liek that, but I
am not that familiar with it.

You have stumbled upon a reason why so many experts choose to config by hand
editing the files and storing lots of info in comments about why certain
things are set the way they are.

Real World, The, n.:
1. In programming, those institutions at which programming may

The location of the status quo. 5. Anywhere outside a university.
Poor fellow, he's left MIT and gone into the real world. Used

of someone who has entered the real world is not unlike talking about a
deceased person.
