[newbie] Re: DHCP Server

The issue is that the client machine (a customer's machine) doesn't seem to want to pick up the IP; I can set it up with static and it's right to go, but when I set it to DHCP it doesn't suck and IP from the pool...banging head now. If the client get a 169.xx.xx.xx address, then it can't connect to a dhcp server on the network, which would suggest a) server's not running b) server's unreachable c) ghost in the machine Since you say a is ok, and c is not likely, then I'd check shorewall for ports 67 and 68? both tcp and udp? A 169.xx.xx.xx is the address it takes when tried to get from dhcp with no result (usually a timeout of a minute when starting network), AND pinged with no response. The PPPoE settings allowed for me to maintain the proper hostname internally but use the DHCP assigned hostname externally - which was fine by me, but I did NOT want the hostname changed internally as I have applications and services that are tied to the internal hostname. Just for giggles and grins I also forced a chmod on the /etc/hostname file to make SURE it was going to stay straight... [newbie] RE: DHCP
Can anyone point me to a comprehensive article, book, etc. for Linux and DHCP. It seems that my computer, when conected to my DSL changes the host name on my computer. When I disconnect it returns to normal. Any ideas on how I can change it so that it doesn't do it ? TIA, Maureen Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] RE: DHCP
Could it not be that the DHCP server of your DSL provider is assigning you a name (and an IP address) when you connect? I know that when I communicated the IP address of my machine to the network administrator for DNS and DHCP I also had to tell them the host name I wanted for my machine. I don't know of books or HOWTO (have you tried www.tldp.org?), but you can try $ man dhclient.conf $ man dhclient Also, you can read the current DHCP info typing # cat dhclient-eth0.leases Can I ask why do you want to force a particular hostname during the DSL connection? raffaele [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Can anyone point me to a comprehensive article, book, etc. for Linux and DHCP. TIA, Maureen No need for a book to answer that question. All you have to do is go through the wizard in MandrakControlCentreNetworking Select Expert mode and then uncheck the box to get host name from dhcp. Note after exiting the Wizard with 'Finish' Exit the drakconnect GUI with 'Cancel' or else your changes will be lost. (Bug 1881 is **still** not fixed :-( ) Alternatively you can edit the config file directly. Edit /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 and delete the line saying NEEDHOSTNAME derek -- -- www.jennings.homelinux.net http://twiki.mdklinuxfaq.org Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft?
