Re: [newbie] RE: stop email please

2000-01-05 Thread Ernest N. Wilcox Jr.

The Winmodem will not work in Linux, because part of the firmware for the modem
is simulated in software. Any ISA modem with jumper or dip switches for port
and IRQ configuration should work OK. You do not have to use a 56K v.90 modem
if you do not want to, however, you will get better connect speeds if you do.

I recently purchashed Linux-Mandrake 6.5 and I am not able to configure the
modem so that it connects to the internet. Maybe it's because I have
winmodem. Also my provider is ATT. Which modem do you think I should use so
that I can connect to the internet?
Does the modem have to be the technology V90 to be used with Linux?

 http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html

towards the bottom of the page look for a link to 'view entire
table' This list is updated frequently, but is never complete.

A search of 'hardware modem' at www.pricewatch.com will return
about 25 hardware modems starting at $26

No. LINUX supports any modem that's not a WinModem [or USB]. Please state
your modem and type and we shall see.

Basically, just stay away from any PCI modem.

Linux WILL NOT recognize "Winmodems", only hardware modems. I have Mandrake
6.5 and got a USRobotics 56K voice modem which is recognized by Linux when
the modem is not set up for plug and play. It needs to be set up for com 4
and IRQ 3 with the jumpers on the card.

Good Luck.

If it has to load "emulators" when the modem is installed in Windows, it's
probably (surely) a Winmodem. Hardware modem don't need "emulators", they do
the processing themselves, not the CPU.

As a rule, you could almost bet the farm that ANY internal PCI modem (NOT ISA -
and regardless of brand) is a winmodem.
