Re: [newbie] StarOffice won't install on mandrake6.0

Hi, Don

I've found your mail regarding the installation of Staroffice, in
which you admit to have successfully installed the aforasaid software.
Can you please provide me with a step-by-step guide of what you've
for that installation to be successfull. I've got Mandrake6.0 and it
keeps complaining about the libraries files not being existent.

Thanks in advance.

Bernardo

just download version 5.1 from the staroffice website and install it - and
ignore the warnings about missing libraries (keep installing).

Hi Bernardo,

just 2 weeks ago I installed mandrake 6.0 and then I wanted to give SO
5.1 a try. After downloading and untarring I started the installation
script (as user) and saw a lot of warning abouts several libs not beeing
found on my system. But it also said, that I may proceed with the
installation and have a good chance that it would work anyway. So did I
and -surprise- it worked without any problems or complaints since that
very moment. It takes some time to start on my pc (P133, 64MB RAM) but
when it's up and running, it is ok. So I recommend you just to go ahead
- you can't ruin anything and most probably it works!

Bye, Willy

Sure, try wget, which you should have installed already if you're using M6.
It's a console program, so type 'man wget' to see instructions on how to use
it.

Also, if you're using KDE, there's a nice download manager called Caitoo which
you can get at http://devel-home.kde.org/kget/

Don,
I tried that and ended back at the prompt without it installing. Any
other
ideas?

 Get 5.1 - 5.0 doesn't work with glibc 2.1 based systems like Mandrake 6.

When I try to install StarOffice 5.0 on Mandrake 6.0, I get a message
that glibc doesn't exist, so I must install glibc 2.0.7.

The 5.1 installer still claims there's a problem, but if you just ignore
 it, it works.

Didn't much like it, but it serves until something better (KOffice?)
  comes along/

Good news here: Today's CVS snapshot of KOffice is the first one ever that
compiled out of the box, and actually does something useful.

However, it requires KDE 2.0, so unless you want to go totally unstable,
there's a bit of waiting left.

The first Mandrake version with KDE 2.0 will also include KOffice.

When I try to install StarOffice 5.0 on Mandrake 6.0, I get a message
that glibc doesn't exist, so I must install glibc 2.0.7. I see glibc
2.1.1 in /usr/doc and /usr/lib. When I try to install glibc 2.0.7, it
won't, of course, install, claiming that it won't work with the new
loader. If I try to go ahead and install, it refuses.
This was a version of StarOffice I used on 5.2.

Hello Bernhard, many millions of thanks for your reply. I guess I
tossed away $50. Well, so much for that. Anyway, Venus is really a
winner. I am not a computer tech, so its ease of use is a real help to
me. Thanks a million for coming up with something that, on the desktop,
makes windoze look sick and creaky and old.
