I just installed PMFirewall, and found a good Mandrake online tutorial
at http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/demos/Networking/IPmasq/pages/ that
led me through the setup. So I got it up and running successfully. I
port scanned myself using http://crypto.yashy.com and had no holes. The
startup services on your list that I had enabled and running during the
port scan were xfs and network. So I guess you can leave those two
running safely if you need them. I'm not sure if they are really needed
though in a desktop situation. I will remove them if I find out they are
not needed. rawdevices I have set in startup services but it was not
running. irda and fetchmail i do not have in my list of startup
services. If you use the self port scan at the forementioned URL, su in
a terminal first and run "tail -f /var/log/messages". Then you will see
all the attempts at getting in, and if they all have a DENY in them,
your door is locked.

Sorry, I am not trying to answer the question here - I am merely
adding to it. There are some other services I have queries about. I
have looked at the services section at mandrakeuser.org but it hasn't
been updated since Mandrake 7.1, so it is missing a few entries.

* drakfont:
I do use TrueType fonts, but is it really necessary to have a daemon
to check these fonts every time I boot? It adds about 5 seconds to
bootup time and probably uses some memory too.

* kheader:
This looks (from the DrakConf description) like it would be useful,
but is it necessary?

Thanks for any help.

RE: [newbie] Startup services, which are necessary?

2001-03-09 Thread Paul Rodríguez

Certainly! For starters, I learned xFS is necessary to run X. It's a font
server, apparently you can tell xfree86 not to need it somehow by editing
some files, but I'm not sure why you would want to. And fetchmail only
seems to be necessary if you are running a mail server (or I was told if you
want to set up a server so you can have [EMAIL PROTECTED] email address,
again not quite sure how to do that either).

Not sure about the other ones yet. I'll let you know. I definately shut
off all web servers (like apache and zope), and ftp. Also nfs.

Here are what the metioned services do; you decide if you need them:

IRDA = IR communication. Do you use an IR device?

XFS = The Xfont server. Normally required for X windows to
run...

rawdevice = is used to bind a Linux raw character device to a block
device.

fetchmail = is a mail-retrieval and forwarding utility; it
fetches mail from remote mailservers and forwards it to your local (client)
machine's delivery system. Not nessessary (I don't think, not certain)
if you use a popclient like Netscape.

[newbie] Startup services, which are necessary?

Hi, I'm in the
process of trying to secure my system. I have pmfirewall set up and
working well, but there are a lot of holes still. One of the things that I
am trying to do is minimize unnecessary startup services, both for speed and
security. I've shut a bunch down, mostly servers that I'm not running, but
there are a few that I'm not sure about.

Namely:
