[newbie] The silly question

2003-03-23 Thread Teilhard Knight
I have an application on CD I want to install in Mandrake. I can explore the
files of the CD and I can see the installer, but I do not see what to do with
it. I should have guessed it was like in Windows where one clicks on the icon
and an installer window displays. What should I do in here?

It depends a bit on what kind of file it is. You will need to tell us its
extension. Some application have installation instructions in the compressed
file. If that is so, you will be able to look inside it with Arkiver.

If installername is X then ./X in a console-window as su.

Hey Femme.

I think what you're looking for is ROX.

Somebody asked me on #mandrake what file manager I use. You know I'm a
console man, so my answer was xterm. However, somebody else came up
with the option of ROX.

It's pretty simple, but you can set up defaults to open up certain file
types, and it is GUI of course.

I've installed it, but have only played with it breifly. It looks nice,
and appears to be pretty functional though.

Check it out, it may be what you're looking for in E. But keep in mind
you can still use your other file managers in E. You can run Konqueror
in if you'd like.

http://rox.sourceforge.net/rox_filer.php3

Hope that helps!

Haven't paid attention to this thread -- has anyone recommended Midnight
Commander? It's quite useful for me, but I don't like the default
colors and I can't even set the colors to my preference.

But, if you use Midnight Commander on SourceForge, the color is just
perfect (black text on a white background -- best I could do was black
text on a gray background). (Aside: I've been trying to find out how
SourceForge did that -- I suspect they compiled their own version -- I
will probably make some attempt to get a copy of their binary -- if
others were interested that might help.)

Yeah, I've just switched to KDE 3.0, which I like better than Gnome 1.4.
Perhaps Gnome 2.0 will be better. I usually prefer Gnome as I find it faster
than KDE, but 3.0 is much faster IMO than 2.2 was. Of course, I think KDE
3.0 caused my hard-drive to crash (not really, I just need to blame someone
:P).

I use XWC , although it's seems to have stopped development, I still think
it's great! It should be on cd 3 if I remember correctly.

Nautilus looks good, but if far to heavy in my opinion. That actually
countsfor Gnome too. That's why I switched to Fluxbox. Actually, the whole
fluxbox uses as much memory as just the panel in Gnome :-)
