Re: [newbie] Which Linux?

2001-08-21 Thread d

LURKER here,

While the subject is here, I have been having most fun with Linux-Mandrake
7.0 for about a year. Still using this olé version for learning as much as
possible. I recently purchased a copy of Debian 2.0 but find it much more
difficult, more for the Has been drip under pressure (EXPERT?). Until
then this is the one to use for learning, it is easier to convert what you
know about WindBlows to Linux and beyond. That will come with time, but
for learning this is the BEST one to use.

TIA,

I qualify as an almost rank newbie. I've been a recovering Windoze-holic for
almost two weeks now. I had installed but only sparingly used Mandrake 7.0 a
year ago. I had tried and failed to install Mandrake 7.1 and 7.2 (display
problems mostly), plus another local (Denver, Colorado) release based on Red
Hat. Now I'm on Mandrake 8.0

Part of this may be my own improved ability to find sources of support that I
didn't know about a year ago, too. Both the newbies list and a similar local
list have proven useful, as has usenet. You definitely want to seek out your
local LUG as well though - they tend to provide solid knowledge and
assistance. Since you're in London, check out http://gllug.linux.co.uk/ I'm
taking my machine to a local install fest in a couple of weeks (CLUE - Sept
15, if any Denver locals are reading this) to resolve a couple of low
priority configuration issues.

Re: [newbie] Which Linux?

Adrian:

I'll let others sing the hymns of praise about the obvious superiority
of Mandrake over other distributions, and just point out one big
advantage of Mandrake that isn't often mentioned in the reviews: Support
-- between this mail list, the Mandrake Forum, the online tutorials and
MandrakeUser.org, you can usually find an answer in a short time.

Here's a short (and incomplete) list of recommendations that will make
the transition easier:
1. Buy one of the boxed sets for your first install. The extra CD's and
the manuals are very useful.
2. Check your hardware against the compatibility lists. Based on the
postings here, the major troublemakers are winmodems, sound cards and
video cards.
3. Before you pop the Mandrake CD in the drive, be sure that you have a
valid Windows boot disk, and that you have an adequate backup of your
Windows data files. Sometimes stuff happens.
4. You mention that you've used Mandrake before. Any chance on getting
some help from that source?
Good luck,
Carroll

8.0 proved to be the easiest install, with the most built in functionality.
7.0 didn't have Star Office and kmail, istr. With 8.0, I've had to do very
little searching out of feral rpm's to install - almost everything that I
really need came with the original package. That convenience was a major
plus, and let me drop windows as soon as I was satisfied that I had my basic
system working.

Mandrake is one of the best distros to start with (and continue with too).
I know that Suse is popular in Germany, it has a good setup and stable
base also. I fought redhat a few times and did not get it to see my ISDN card.
Mandrake told me Ah, ISDN. Okay. and that was about all. It works just like
that.
I can state that Mandrake gave me the most out of all Linux distros that I
have tried (Redhat, Slackware and Mandrake). It's clean, stable, and the
user support is superb (see this list).
