Re: [newbie] failing to unmount

If you go to the updates page of the Mandrake site it has a blurb on this bug.

Everyone should be updating their kernel to 2.2.9-27 anyway because of a
security bug... but this as well as the initscripts is what is needed to
fix the unmount bug..

I have that bug as well.. I have updated initscripts.. I need to download
and update the kernel now.. OH NO!! LOL!! hopefully I wont bugger up my system

For those that have been following my saga... I now have a working modem
and sound card.. YE HA! I have mounted both my windoze partitions on Linux
to get access to all my pics and other files.

So the sun is a little brighter on my mandrake 6.0 install.

Don't know if the kernel upgrade specifically address anything to do with
the unmounting bug (i have my doubts as all i updated were the init scripts
and then the problem went away), but it's certainly not true to say everyone
should upgrade the kernel because of the security bug.

I don't have a modem in my PC - i have a laptop running W98 for work, and
use that instead. Therefore, as the Linux box is never connected to anyone
except itself, this means no security threat !!

Okay, i haven't read the updates page - but didn't the unmount problem go
away after just upgrading the initscripts ??

True.. if your not using the linux box to connect to ANYTHING then there is
nothing to worry about security wise..

Actually I have not shut it down since I have updated Martin.. LOL! So I
dont know yet. ;o)

After updating your kernal make sure to point lilo.conf to it change the
2.2.2.19 to 2.2.2.31 in lilo.conf make sure the #'s are correct.. i think
the latest is 31. after your done editing that lilo.conf file run lilo from
a term and reboot. when you run lilo after editing the lilo.conf file you
should see..

adding
linux *
win98

the win98 is your other os if you have one.. if not then it is only linux *
the * states that it is the default loadup os if you opted to have win98
start first it would be

adding
win98 *
linux

John Aldrich wrote:

Yes, but which files do you want to install??? There are at least a dozen
"kernel" RPM files in the "upgrades" directory. Not knowing WHICH files and
WHAT ORDER is a real pain, as I found out last night! Please, let's try to
be a BIT more specific! For example, I've got an SMP machine, and there's
kernel files specific to SMP. Do I still need to install kernel-BOOT? (I
would guess so.) What about "kernel-smp-fb.x..i586.rpm" Hell, I
just wish there was a FAQ on this sort of thing, stating generically which
kernel files to install in which order, i.e. "First, install
kernel-xx.x, then kernel-xx, followed by kernel-x, and then
the initscripts rpm and then run LILO." So far, I haven't found anything
like that. I even looked on the Mandrake page and didn't find it! I'm afraid
that this sort of "key information" is NOT readily available, unless it's in
the manuals, which, admittedly, I haven't even opened yet!

You'll want to install the kernel-smp and kernel-headers packages. The
kernel-BOOT package only installs a kernel matching the "install" kernel
on the installation disks. You might want kernel-doc if you're
interested in the documentation that comes with the kernel distribution.

As to which kernel-smp, choose between Pentium and Pentium II (i586,
i686) for whichever is appropriate to your system.

Goto www.linux-mandrake.com and download the new initscripts and kernel.
Install them. Open up lilo.conf in a text editor of some sort and change
the kernel version ( i.e. 2.2.2.9 to 2.2.2.27 or something like that.) Save
the file and close the editor. From a terminal window run lilo. Reboot
the system and all should be well.

I believe that if you download the initscripts update RPM, the umount
problem will be fixed. If you can connect to the internet from Mandrake,
click the "updates" icon on the KDE desktop. Choose a nearby mirror, and
away you go!

If you can't get online from Linux, you can surf to
http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/fdownload.php3 and choose a mirror near
you. You'll find update RPMs in the updates/6.0/RPMS directory.

There is a known bug in Mandrake 6.0 from the CDRom. You
need to update the kernal and initscripts from Mandrake or
 one of the mirrors.

I know it's kind of fast and hard to catch, but did you catch what's not
unmounting? also check ps ax|grep defunct before you shutdown.
